Are quail broody or would I need an incubator to raise them? I'd really like to start raising them, but dont know if i want to do it if i need to hatch them myself. I'm new to birds, and want to dive in to them, but need to build my chicken coop before I buy or build an incubator.

On a rare occasion a cotournix hen may go broody.

So an incubator would be needed for reliable flock expansion.

Hatching them is relatively easy. 18 days.

I keep my birds in a rabbit hutch. And wire rabbit cages.

Figure about 1 square foot a birds.

I have the housing for them, since I used to raise rabbits, I just don' have an incubator.

There are several thread on building incubators on here.

If you want a video youtube. Search. Rush lane poultry.

I have used some cheaper commercial (styros). Lots of bad hatches.

If you go to buy an incubator. Save up and get one that' is decent.

If u go styro look at a 1588 genesis.

I've hatched both Coturnix and Button quail very successfully in a cheap incubator - one of those octagonal chinese ones. I've even finished hatching finch eggs in there (when the father decided to kill the first hatchling). It made a great brooder for the finches too until they started to feather up. For the $80 NZD it's done darn good service.

Check out some of the diy incubators here. There are several, and from what I've heard, pretty reliable and inexpensive to build.

I'll have to check them out. I was just hoping to avoid it. I do have plenty of coolers around here.
