hey guys! iam not only new to the forum, but also new to hatching. I've had birds and poultry for many years but never hatched any myself. i just started making my first incubator, hopefully with some advice from you guys it'll be a success!

i had a question about the fan: i put a small 12v dc fan in my incubator, it is faced towards the bulb and i used a 5v charger to hook it up. but the fan is so small that it barely seems to be blowing any air, i put my hand in front and could hardly feel anything. Do you guys think that will be fine or is there anything i can do to improve it? any suggestions will be very helpful.
thanks

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

It doesn't take much air in the incubator as long as it moves the still air and draws in oxygen. So in my opinion, yours will work just fine.

Here is a link to our homemade incubators pages from our members. Maybe you can glean some info about your own setup from these ideas...

Good luck and I hope you can get some eggs set soon!

Thanks a lot for the advice :D also, my fan is attached to the wall of the cooler. Do I need to keep some open space between the wall and the fan so it pulls air?

It will help the fan from not burning out if you keep it away from the wall a bit. If it has to struggle to move air, it will strain the motor. Put in a few vents that can be opened and closed. I like to run mine open thru the entire process for max oxygen. But there may be environmental issues that you need to close one of them down. At lock down, you will want to open them completely open as the chicks need all the oxygen they can get. :-)

Welcome to BYC! I tried making a homemade incubator once and it was a disaster, so I ended up buying an inexpensive styrofoam incubator that worked great. I hope you have better success with your homemade incubator. Good luck.

Really appreciate the help guys :) here's a pic. Looks alright?

Is that a computer fan if so perfect as you are only trying to move a little bit of air not cool it off in the incubator ...
