I have an old 1602N Thermal Hava- Bator incubator, which at times the temp; go down to 97 and if not stopped will go up to 101. The low temp; is at night and the rise is during the day. My question is if I lined the incubator with ploystyrene would I have a better chance of keeping an even temp; as at one time I will only have 10 eggs in it . I have it in a room out of sunshine, drafts and although it is winter here I keep the temp; as even as I can.

I used a 1602n and it worked great, but let me ask---it does have a wafer thermostat doesn't it? Does it have the fan in it?
Is the room it is in staying about a steady temp? Or up and down---unheated?
Keep in mind that the incubator has to breath/vent so if you wrap it you can not cover the vent holes.
The temp from 97 to 101 is a little wide. Is it possible to move it to a more temperature stable room?

Yes it has a wafer thermostat , no fan, we have ducted heating via the ceiling in our home . It is the only room at night that holds its heat. I do have towels around it at night not covering the vent holds. Because with only 10 eggs I had thought by taking up the extra space inside would not have the heater working so hard

Question Riverman, When you are starting to incubate your eggs do you let your incubator go till it gets to 100 turn then the red light and let it run for half a day, before putting the eggs in do you let it cool down

If its the first time using a incubator, I turn it on a few days ahead and allow it to run, adjusting the thermostat a tweak here or there to get the temp stable, once it is right---in the range I let it run a day and keep checking it. After a day with it being right---if I am ready to set---I set-----if I do not have the eggs gathered yet I just cut it off until about 24 hours before I need it---re-plug and re-check---should be right being I have no one that bothers mine.
I then put the room temp eggs in it and do not worry about the temp for 48hours, but usually it will be right in about 24 hours----I do check to make sure for some reason it is not to high. In 48 hours----if it is a speck low and has been for the last day---I lightly tweek, but rarely have to do that.

After your incubator gets up to temp----You can fill 16oz water bottles with 100 degree water--let the temp stablize before you set the eggs-----this work like a heat sink----which helps to keep the temp more steady/fills the extra space..

The 16 oz of water does that go in from the start or do just fill up the centre channel?

From your post above "Because with only 10 eggs I had thought by taking up the extra space inside would not have the heater working so hard" I was saying you can fill the extra space with water/soda bottles----has nothing to do with the water you will use for incubation. Just "heatsink" to fill up the extra space----you did not mention if you are using a turner----but if you are then get a couple dozen of cheap non fertile eggs from the grocery store to mark and add in the turner slots to act as a heat sink.
