Incubator Tempatures

So, my little brother and I might set a hatch of silkie eggs soon, the only problem being we can't do it in the house. The garage is the most obvious place, but it's colder than our refrigerator out there. Would that be a problem for the bator? We could set up one of the heat lamps we use for brooding chicks to make an area of it warmer. Would that work?

In my opinion, I don't think that would work. I think you need to have the incubator in a draft free area. A heated basement may be a better choice. The other thing you need to take into consideration is, are the reasons you cannot have the incubator inside also going to be reasons for you 2 not to be able to have chicks inside the house. If your answer to that is yes, then you shouldn't even try to start a hatch until temperatures are in the 50's to 60s, because after you hatch your chicks they will need to be inside the house, draft free and with heat lamps for about 6-8 weeks (until fully feathered). Then even then bringing them outside is a thing you do gradually. Hope it helps.

Why are you not allowed to incubate in the house? Do you even have your parent's permission to try to hatch some eggs? Unless you have a VERY expensive incubator, you're doomed right from the start because the cheaper ones are very fickle with temp changes in the room they are set up in.

Our landlord doesn't want us having pets in the house. Anyhow, we're putting off this plan for a while because one of our silkie hens has gone broody.
