Southern Chic, How did your hatch go? I have been waiting patiently for you to start a topic and let us know, or is it still to early?

That i have never seen using a electric skillet thats cool!

what temp do you have it setting at? good luck with the hatching and cant wait to hear how the hatching goes

Well, I had 3 eggs grow a chick but, they never peeped. I went in to check on them after day 23! They were dead! I have eggs still in the frybator. Let's see, I just put in 6 on the 23rd, and I have 6 more due to hatch between Thursday and Saturday. I only have a fish tank thermometer. I have ordered a thermometer/hydrometer off ebay so it should be here this week some time. I have no idea what the humity is in there. I don't have much hope for the ones that are supposed to hatch later this week. My step-daughter left the lid off of it overnight and they got pretty cold. About 78-80 degrees. She just forgot to put it back on. No big deal, I have more eggs. I would just love to have 1 hatch. I think things will go alot better once I get the thermometer/hydrometer.

I also think that I had the humidity way too high. My mom, who was raised on a chicken farm, told me to sprinkle the water on the eggs everytime that I turned them! Everywhere else that I have read says only to do this on the days that you stop turning the eggs. I guess that I shouldn't have listened to my mom!

I am using mixed breed eggs so, even though I hate it. I can afford to loose some. I just know this will work, I got them to grow all the way, just not hatch! I just have to get the thermometer/hydrometer, so I can keep track of everything. I will keep you up to date on my progress or not progress.

I am also going to make another post about turning the eggs. I think that I might be doing it too much. I turn every four hours. I have read to only do it 2 times a day. Some charts that I have gotten say 3 times a day some say 5 times a day, I don't know!

Southernchick, I still think you might end up with a successful hatch from this frybator! Keep trying. I think I'm with you on wetting the eggs for moisture, that might not have been a good thing. BUT, you need to find a way to keep the moisture during the whole time of the incubation process. And yes, definately get a good thermometer. I still think you might pull off a hatch in the frybator. If you do I definately want to hear about it. This idea is sooo cool. Hope it eventually hatches a few for you. Good luck, Johnny

WOW! I have never heard of this...its amazing, I keep thinking to myself "I could never have thought of that" LOL! But I hope it works for you, and when it does I will need the directions so I can try it myself! I could save some big $$ with using homemade incubators! Thanks and keep us posted!

I am so upset!!!
I have had 5 grow to a chick, but they never peep! I don't understand what I am doing wrong. I have my new thermometer/hygrometer, and it's very humid in there. I just can't figure out what I am doing wrong! I just hate that I am killing these little guys.

Why will they grow and not peep? They don't even break into the air cell before they die! I just want to give up on this frybator 'cause I don't want to kill anymore of them. I have 10 eggs in there now and they are due April 12th. I have taken the water out 'cause the RH was 80! Maybe if it's too humid they can't come out of their shells.

If the humidity is to high they will drown when they pip the internal membrane. Water builds up in there and when they pip the membrane they get a beak and lungs full of water instead of air. Try keeping your rh at about 45-50% and see if that doesnt help.

I was thinking, too, that maybe there's not enough air flow/oxygen in the frybator somehow? Most of the inexpensive styrofoam units have holes so oxygen can get to the eggs... so maybe after you stop turning, you're not lifting the lid enough to change the air inside, or the chicks' need for air is so increased by that point that they don't make it. Still, I've heard of this working before, so I know it can be done. I just don't know the nitty-gritty details.

There is a forum thread there that will show you where to go to get the directions to make a home made bator and on this thread you will see the bator that we made and had success! All for under $10!

We have been "testing" other bators on the thread there that I have used...trying also to figure out the "mystery" of the hatching process!

Good luck on the frybator, that is truly a novel one!!
