Incubators Anonymous

Pics
I have one Incubator on and the hatcher on, I had a turkey hatch eggs the last couple days, She decided she was done (young hen) and left some eggs, one was partially zipped, and another, I put them in the hatcher. Got on poult but it seems to have problems.

The other is still there, I suppose I should candle it and see if it is rotten before it explodes.

I had hoped to be done hatching by this time of the year. I am wrong I will hatch all year I am afraid.

I am doing some test breeding of my PC. To find a minor problem with them. (Show bird problem not a real problem for 95% of the world) They are beautiful birds but I am getting legs that are a dark dusky yellow or worse on some.

Then on my Legbars I am hatching with one rooster and one hen right now and plan to add 2 more to get combs more in line with the ridiculous proposed SOP...(not good combs for up north) and to get a better cream color.

These babies will not be show birds ever, they will be parents of next year (2018)'s show birds.

It is all part of my overall plan to reduce numbers and stop selling chicks. I make no money, worry too much and end up selling birds to people that I have to compete with at the shows. Next years non- show birds will become backyard birds sold at POL or later or BBQ fodder.

BTW it is because of LIZ keeping me informed and sending me pictures of the chicks she got from me that I found the problem......

Also for those of you with sportsman hatchers. When you empty your hatching trays empty from the bottom up, I always did top down. I hatch each breed in its own tray or with a bird that a blind deaf mute could tell apart. Well, when you pull the tray out from the top first, and reach in the silly birds can drop off the tray abd fall into the next tray.. If you cannot tell them apart they could be sold as the wrong breed...

Pulling from the bottom first eliminates that potential problem.

they are all very cute

That they are..BUT cute does not impress judges...

Just because I stopped hatching does not mean I stopped bringing in chicks and poults....I have 5 BCM from nice stock coming in today and and 15 poults from Porter's next month

I'm now working to reduce the flock size by butchering all unnecessary roos and moving all known cockerels out to free range early. I still have a hard time even considering butchering older hens though.

All the CX are outside in the tractor now. Only a couple more weeks til they're ready to be butchered. I still have a few brooders full though.

HI I am an addict. Lol ok so I only have one incubator on in the house and by these rules it doesn't count because it has been hatched in. Whew that saves me. It has under 40 eggs in it that are due the 2nd of july. I also have a broody sitting on 4 due the same time. And another broody sitting on 9 due the middle of july....

Welcome!you're right, you don't have an incubator, you have a hatcher which means, you still need to get an incubator lol

I don't know lol my poor hubby didn't realize that my bator was going to become a permanent night light in our bedroom...... it's just a cheap Chinese knock off but so far we have hatched a few.... and besides I have sold 4 from my January hatch and my entire may hatch within the last week so I definitely need to hatch more right? Oh and I set the last batch by the moon so hopefully they thrive!

Mine are also permanent additions to our bedroom (GQF cabinet and GQF hova bator). Hubby doesn't mind that as much as the brooder that sits next to the breed with the red light on all spring lol. You definitely need to hatch more if you've had no trouble won't them all lol
