Here are some of her First of July chicks ......

First egg to hatch was 2 July 2014
jumpy.gif

This is the mass of egg's she was sitting on and yes others
would come in and give her more overtime ......

3 July she hatched out more ...

4 July the egg's just keep hatching ...

4 July I had to put feed and water in the nesting area as the chicks
were all over the place and were a hand full for her ....

As you can see her first hatch was becoming overwhelming
for her so I removed the rest of the egg's and put them into
the incubator to finish off the hatching for her ....

But she decided it was time to get a bigger home with some
room to move around in ....

Kids will clime all over ya if you let them .....

So I just so happened to have some Marans chicks coming
in and she took them also .....

This was her new home for three more weeks so with her
hatching and my finishing and the new chicks she raised
30 chicks on her first run then started producing more egg's
during the forth week of raising the chicks and off she went
to start her next bunch ......

What an amazing mama! I love the pics with chicks on her back... those chicks are so funny and cute!

I tried to count and it looks like almost 25 chicks! She is a natural.

That sounds like my life... working from home, managing the "farm" (really just a large garden and animals) and homeschooling... still working on the routine part. I'm an artist and routine just doesn't come naturally
wink.png

Same here. (being an artist and routine not coming naturally)
I've had some "help" from DH. But it simplifies things significantly if you can just create roads around your day that follow your natural bent. KWIM?
I could help if you wanted. Just PM me. =)

Mine says that exact same thing all the time..LOL! But he also includes the fact that I would name all the animals, therefore we could NEVER eat any of them
hide.gif
which is totally true
idunno.gif
We have bantams for pets...tiny eggs are a bonus
wink.png

LOL
We have named a lot of our chickens, but we've also processed some of the named ones, so...even the ones that have names aren't pets and are subject to being sent to freezer camp. I know that sounds cruel, but it's just the way we do things.
We have a small "mascot" flock (as DH refers to them) of Cochin Bantams. We're not getting any eggs yet, but I don't think the girls are going to let us have many of them anyway, if my first Cochin Bantam was any indication....we'll see. The tiny eggs are definitely a bonus; I like having them hard boiled, they're so cute!!!

Well I cleaned up and put away my incubator after having it running from January till the middle of August then yesterday one of my young pullets that has been missing for several weeks showed up with some new additions to present to me

Aw!!!
love.gif

Wish my pullet would disappear and come back with additions!!! (She's a Leghorn/GLW mix, so it's super unlikely). One can hope...*sigh

Well, I have rebuilt a coop, built a new coop, hatched some eggs, hatched some more eggs that didn't turn out so well, had a broody hen and gave her 6 purchased fertile eggs, had a snake get one (I got the snake!) had her break one (it was alive :( ) Had her hatch one that she threw out of the nest..so I put it in the brooder and it got yolk sack infection and I had to learn euthanization fast :( ..and now have about 30 eggs in my NEW incubator with the automatic turner and fan and 3 eggs I'm not sure about the viability in my OLD incubator that I installed the fan kit on after the last disaster hatch....and am contemplating ordering 24 pure breed hatching egg assortment when the incubator is free on the 19th.

The first 16 Ameraucana/Aracuanas hatched are doing FANTASTIC! They climb all over me when I go in their run, and are complete sweethearts! I will keep five and sell the rest once I can sex them..the 8 French Marans from the second hatch are all keepers until sexed, and the 30 or so in the bators are pure mottled/spangled English Orpington and Jubilee Orpington.

All this since I got my first two pullets on July 1st. We got exactly 8 eggs from one Ameraucana before she went broody. My husband doesn't understand why we have to buy eggs when we have 32 chickens.

Anyway, I'm desperate for things to settle, but I will do whatever I have to to make it happen! I just love these chickens, and especially my Australorp Rooster who was supposed to be a hen. I don't know what to do with him, but he doesn't fall into the plan and he is so sweet and pretty! ugh!

You are definitely one busy chick!!!
My broody didn't give me any chicks, she ate two of the nine eggs I let her keep, and just none of them hatched.
We've had to "get" two snakes this summer, but last summer we didn't have any problems (well, we didn't find any snakes in the nesting boxes...) =|
Euthanasia is never fun!!! I'm so sorry!
hugs.gif

I'll be hatching again starting next month, but they'll be mutt chicks, so they'll either have to lay or it's off to freezer camp for them.
I want Ameraucanas!!! Marans are beautiful, aren't they? Orpingtons are such friendly birds!!! I have one (but he doesn't have his girl anymore); I'm not going to be able to process him and I hope DH doesn't do it for me. I tell DH that he's going to have to do it, but I don't think he will and I think he knows that (although I won't shy away from eating any of our chickens, even ones with names) I'd rather not eat this one.
My DH had to get used to the idea of buying eggs and buying feed for chickens. Now that I've got things squared away and it's summer (so they're mostly foraging)...my original flock (the only ones I've been getting eggs out of) are going into their 18-mo molt...
th.gif
So, we're going to have to go back to buying eggs too.
he.gif
25 chickens and we have to buy eggs!
ep.gif

I would either rehome him quickly or reconfigure the plan so he has a place to fall into.
hugs.gif
I don't envy you; that's a hard decision to make!!!

...and I thought this forum was going to help me with my "problem"... I may have to take some of the following under consideration...
wink.png

Signs and symptoms of incubating addiction

  • You’ve lost control over your incubating. You often incubate more than you wanted to, for longer than you intended, or despite telling yourself you wouldn’t.
  • You want to quit incubating, but you can’t. You have a persistent desire to cut down or stop your incubating, but your efforts to quit have been unsuccessful.
  • You have given up other activities because of incubating. You’re spending less time on activities that used to be important to you (hanging out with family and friends, going to the gym) because of your incubating.
  • Incubating takes up a great deal of your energy and focus. You spend a lot of time incubating, thinking about it, or recovering from its effects ( figuring out what to do with all the chicks).
  • You incubate even though you know it’s causing problems. Again, trying to figure out what to do with all the chicks!

If you have a incubating problem, you may deny it by:

  • Drastically underestimating how much you incubate.
  • Downplaying the consequences of your incubating.
  • Complaining that family and friends are exaggerating the issue.
  • Hiding evidence of your incubating activities.

This is @Alaskan all over!!!

Well crap! I'm supposed to have a man coming to buy juvies today. I went out to collect them, cause I won't let others walk in my chicken area, and its so wet and muddy out there!! Rained all day and all night, & I have fluffy birds!!! Grrrr! This should be my LAST set that I didn't use medicated chick start for. I had turkey poults also at the time, so was using game bird starter. I've never had so many dang issues with Cocci, but I've ALWAYS used medicated in the past. Guess I'm not selling birds this week.
hugs.gif

Start treating them with Corid right away.
Maybe you could offer the man to take a couple of extras (just in case) and give him ready made Corid water to take with the chicks (just in case) and...IDK...maybe that's irresponsible (or genius)...I'm not a good judge of that stuff.....
I'm sorry!

Oh that is just a bunch of hog wash I have no problem getting rid od of my chicks ...
jumpy.gif

I was tired of my so called friends anyway as they just were not in to incubating or chicks
lau.gif

And I just cleaned up my incubator after incubating from January till the middle of August anyway
love.gif

Also I do not plan on using the incubating anymore till next month as I will be letting the local school use the incubator for a science class because the teacher there has been unsuccessful for the last 3 years running so I am going to set every thing up for them and donate the egg's and check out their progress daily so I have everything under control here ......

this is my real problem unauthorized hatching

Ya she just takes it upon herself to incubate

Send her to me; I need some help with unauthorized hatching!!!

you neglected to mention that segment of the hatchaholics that freely admit they have a problem, don't plan to hide it or stop, and don't really give a hoot if others (family, friends, etc) have a problem with it. LOL

I'm in this category!!! Lol

I'm halfway between the categories...well, until I get a real incubator that is.
Once I have a real incubator (and the weather cools off so I can use my homemade incubator(s)...), then I'll be in the first category.
hide.gif
There's just not much to hide or downplay at the moment...

Well, clearly, that is what I should aspire to

I'm aspiring too....

Oh, wow! I had one that I think would have been like that (if I had just let her be)...except she was a bantie.
What breed(s) is she, BTW? (just curious) She's gorgeous!!!

Ya she is great but I had to spend so much time to get the pictures as they really move so fast and to just get them in action is really time consuming so thank you for taking the time to appreciate them
smile.png

I found that (I use my phone for pics) if I take video of the chicken(s) or chick(s) I want pics of, it's much easier to play that back while I'm sitting down and take the stills I want out of the video. KWIM?
Of course we appreciate them!!!

I'm basically sitting on my hands waiting for about two more weeks, then I should have a real incubator!!! Then I'll be able to start hatching.
In the meantime...I've got chicks coming this week!!! two dozen little fuzz butts should be arriving at the post office some time between Wed and Fri!!! I'm sooooo excited to have babies, even if someone else got to do the hatching part for me!!!

Something just occurred to me: I wonder if ppl who work in hatcheries have chickens at home...do they hatch peeps...do they get so fed up with all the peeping all day and just want to go home to a nice quiet house at the end of the day...or are they addicted to hatching like we are and just thankful they get paid for it??? Thoughts?

I, for one, am thankful that, when I can't feed my hatchaholism, they feed my babyholism.

I'm in this category!!! Lol
Not me....I hide, hide, hide! My husband says "how many eggs to you have in the incubator now" and I say, I'm not sure, but only half will hatch, and half of those will be roosters, so it's not as many as it looks like! I have actually said to him; "Don't talk about my chickens to people! It's PRIVATE!!"

Now, THAT"S a sickness!!

Nice setup! I was just about to start building two more homebuild incubators, but found a smoking deal on some old sportsman incubators I'll just retrofit with digital controllers.
