The weirdest thing just happened... I have some Seramas in a large brooder/bird cage in my house and I have a brooder of tiny chicks... 2 Seramas ad 2 Silkies that just hatched a few days ago. One of the older Seramas was testing his crow a little bit... it is not very loud and sounds like a little frog crowing. Then I hear from inside the brooder, a tiny Silkie chick standing tall and doing a little crow! You know, as best as he could for being a 4 day old chick??!! I couldn't believe it and didn't know that was even possible. It was kind of adorable except that one of my 2 Silkie chicks is probably a roo. I still can't believe it... has anyone ever seen such a thing?

I've seen chicks try to crow when they're maybe a month old (very rarely). If they've tried to crow at 4 days, I never saw it. Can you try to get a video camera on him? I would love to see that!

He only did it a couple times but it was unmistakable. Thankfully the indoor Seramas aren't crowing very much but they hear the roos outside in the morning. Maybe I can catch him at it again but I am kind of freaked out that a chick would start crowing already.

I also don't know how much merit there is in feather sexing Silkies but the two I have looked just the same so I am afraid they are both boys

I really want a Silkie hen or 2 or 5.

So, I'm hot and heavy into incubating after taking the summer off. I just candled and I had the best fertility rate EVER! (for my girls) I put 38 in the bator and only had 1 clear

I also bought another Genesis to use as a hatcher after fighting with my still air with the last hatch. Hopefully I will also have my best hatch rate ever

Ha, ha ha!! and SOMEBODY is going to have almost 40 chickens in the house all winter!!! Sorry, I couldn't resist that.. I have a bunch of eggs set too, due to hatch mid November.

(congratulations on the fertility rate!)

I swear if you put fragile on the box it's drop kicked by USPS. I collect antique glass and most sellers use the postal service. It's total gamble when you open the box. But I had eggs shipped anyway. They all came intact but they have only been in the incubator for a few days. So my fingers are crossed. How many days until I can candle them and see what's going on? I cracked one attempting to candle and I don't want to handle them again until I can actually see for sure.

I usually candle at day 7 and can usually see the veins developing. You can wait until day 10 if you really want to make sure you can see signs of life when you candle

And I know what you mean about rough handling in the mail

Good luck with your hatch

I got my first quail egg on Halloween! What a treat! She gave me another today. Of course out of the 6 quail I come up with 2 girls and 4 boys. I will just have to hatch some more eggs!

We got a po box bc of our carrier. He lost our mail on at least 7 occasions and refused to deliver packages bc the chickens are out. LOL he was scared of the "small ones" because he "never saw chickens that small and didn't feel safe". He was referring to my 4 week old chicks I put in a portable fenced area in the front yard! It was the worst excuse for not want to do your job I've ever heard! I showed his boss the "attack chickens" and he laughed. Apparently they were under the impression I had a cock fighting ring and thought about calling animal control! That's when we got a po box....
