thought I'd post up my GQF family... (hubby's having a fit, I just set about 150 eggs... or so.)

the sportsman is on loan (kinda)... it had a faulty control center, I swapped it out with my hatcher's and works good again. just can't add a turner to the hatcher if I ever decide to.
the brooders behind, the bottom 2 are in use, but the bottom one, those chicks will be going outside this weekend likely. the middle one has 3 Serama in it, until some more sfh hatch in a few days.
Tell him to CALM DOWN...... I just set 300 today.... I set 300 last week too but I did cull down to 240.... more will be going next candling too.

Remember some will not hatch, half of what hatches will be roos so at 150 eggs.... maybe 100 will hatch and only 50 will be pullets. NOW if they are shipping eggs we are down to 50% will hatch and 50% of those will be roos so that leaves you will 37ish pullets..... are any bantams cuz they only count as half birds.... so for every 2 banties is equal to one LF chicks..... but then chicks don't count till they are about 16 weeks old RIGHT?

I sold a bunch last year off Craigslist & got taken a few times.
Paid $40 for 1 dozen hatching eggs & sold all 10 chicks to a family who fell in love with them for $45.  They seemed so sincere, the kids were adorable, & I liked the idea of my chicks going to a great home.  The next day I saw my baby chicks (same leg bands, numbers, & all) selling for $10-15 each!  I could understand if they changed their minds & needed to sell a few extras, but why double & triple the price?

Oh that would make me mad!! Those people probably do that a lot then.

That would drive me insane, as well. It's bad enough that there are so many people re-selling hatchery chicks on there, but if I saw my chicks being sold like that I would lose my mind.
The worst thing that has happened to me like that was getting a call asking for fertile eggs. I don't even advertise my eggs, they just called from a chick ad. They only wanted a couple of eggs to go under a broody cochin. I said sure, and gave them three extras when they came over. The next day, while at work, my mother in law called to say someone was in the yard. I had my neighbor go up, and the same couple that I had just basically given free eggs was walking to their car with one of my silkies.
I know it's not the best idea to have people come to your house, but I'm proud of what we have done, and it helps with word of mouth when people see how our chickens are raised

They wouldn't have left my yard without cuffs on. That is just sick. I had a puppy stolen from my yard TWICE. He was a flat coated retriever. I found him the first time while searching the neighborhood, the second time he was gone for good. He was lifted over a locked gate.

I'd have steam rolling out my ears over that one!
We hatch for the fun of it & for my daughter's 4H projects. She got best of show last year for her experiment & is going strong again this year. The chicks sales is only to make back the money we spent on her eggs. I knew we were barely breaking even, but the thought of a loving home trumped money. Also, they wanted ALL of them. (Convenient) We have a few contacts who will take chicks for free as a last resort. So far, all have been sold at the last min.

Usually the chicks are in the house to prevent people spreading whatever in the yard. I certainly hope we never have someone steal a hen. (That story is just awful!) Our yard is fenced & the coop is a good 150' inside. Not to mention getting past the 2 big barking dogs. I donate eggs all the time - to schools. Of course I doubt many preschool teachers would try to steal livestock LOL. It's so scary to imagine someone entering your property & stealing - and much worse to steal living creatures. So sorry about the puppy.

Can't say that I've ever hatched turkeys, but I know the exciting feeling of expecting a great hatch. Hope your little Christmas blessings hatch out healthy in 18 days!

Thank you! I know that turkeys can have a poor hatch rate and probably won't hatch. They where the first eggs that my turkeys layed and I didn't think they would be fertile.I hope that its o.k to hatch the first eggs and that wont make a difference on the health of the chicks.I did put in some chicken eggs so the chicks could help teach the turkeys to eat.

I was wrong about something... the turner on the new controller isn't working either. so it's something else I guess. it's not turning constantly at least, only when the manual button's pushed, so i can still rotate a couple times a day, but still aggravating.
