Incubators Anonymous

Oh gosh, I was going to put up some eggs at auction, wasn't I ? I am so sorry, I have hardly spent any time at all at home. I have been super busy packing eggs and shipping them. This weather is putting a damper on laying a bit as well. I still have a couple boxes to pack tonight. Hopefully the rain and snow will quit and it will warm up tomorrow . Had to come on here and see what everyone is up to. I went to look at a cabinet Bator today, the guy wanted $225. However, the wood was rotting and water swollen so it needs a new cabinet. I bought it for $100, with turners. I have heavy plywood to build a new cabinet with, so hope to get it up and running soon. Had to feed the chickens after dark tonight, I hate that.:p Still need to go check the chicks, bators and chickens in the barn. Will see what I can put up for sale. Deb

I have the same question:
I've wondered about the heat source from the bottom ( the way my homemade one is) vs. the heating element over the top of the eggs like the LG style.

I decided to use my homemade incubator for hatching, and keep the LG for incubating.

I wonder what others experiences have been like.

OK, i finally got that egg layer assortment posted. I hate when i am away from the farm even one day, and today was the second day so i am behind on everything.
As far as heat element placement, if the heat came from the bottom, it would rise and circulate better. However, you might have to worry about chicks getting into contact with it. They always seem to work their way down to the bottom. I bought this cabinet incubator and the wood is in bad shape, but i am still excited about a third cabinet and look forward to getting it out of the truck tomorrow. I will probably build a cabinet and then move the working parts into it. The guy swears it works. I sure hope so. I like the challenge of a rehab:D
So I went out to the garage, and there were a bunch of Polish babies( white, splash, and black) and two lavender orpington babies! I tried to take pictures, but they turned out lousy. Will have to try outside during daytime for a few fast shots. It is way cold out there. Glad i built that insulated chick room! What are you folks hatching? Deb

1 dorking egg in the hatcher, due tomorrow, 5 more to go in tonight, then i've got 1 more lonely egg going in to hatch on the 2nd.

again...

Well, out of 32 eggs I set we ended up with 5 chicks, 4 arucanas and 1 SFH no more pips last night so I think that hatch is done.

1 chick was not walking, leg were still curled up like he sat in the egg. I hobbled him and saw no improvement. Gave him some vitamins and gatoraid. May try the cup thing today and see if that helps. I don't think he will make it.

Set 28 Marans, and got 4 more yesterday. We are going down to talk to my neighbor with SLW and see if I can get some hatching eggs

My next project is working on my Blue Rocks. I want some Blue Barred Rocks, and some nice Blue Rocks. Anybody know someone with Black Rocks??? Good ones????? I have everything to really get these going, they just need to grow up now and look good too.

They were shipped eggs I was hatching for someone else. But was hoping for a better hatch for her and me. I don't think the chick is going to make if trough the night. He has never popped and has pasty butt (I cleaned it but we will see). I have seen it move its legs but not its toes. Makes me think it is paralyzed. It is trying so hard to live
