Incubators Anonymous

Has anyone been having an unuasual amount of detached air cells on shipped eggs lately? I have thrown out so many eggs recently it makes me sick. Does it being warmer (hot) make it worse? I have gotten somewhere around 4 or 5 dozen eggs shipped to me recently and I think there are only about 15 that weren't scrambled or detached. The best rate as far as getting hatch able eggs is from ki4got. 4 of the 8 sg dorking she sent are developing fine, and some quail that have 6/12 developing.
I have someone that wants to trade some Blrw and Bo eggs for one of my lg bators but I am hesitant because I am afraid I will get a bunch of unhatchable eggs and end with nothing for the bator
are you trying to incubate those detached air cells? if not, you should be. i set upright for 3-5 days, until i see if there's life, then put them in the turner and they're hatching for me...

ok anyone ever had multiple broodies share babies? i've got 2 girls that have insisted on broody-ing the same single blue plastic easter egg for a couple weeks now, and i'm contemplating giving them the next hatch... thoughts or suggestions?
Karen, I"m the type that looks to head off problems. If I could do things BETTER,which hasn't happened yet , I would have a separate coop for the broodies. Like a breeding coop and a small run. I don't trust the broodies to manage my best eggs. Too many horror stories of mishaps. I will let them brood eggs eggs that are mutts, from my own stock. ANd therefore not expensive. Just my opionion. Haven't had 2 broodies at once. I do remember a broody stealing eggs from the other nest boxes to hers though.

Edited to rephrase.

Quote: Snowbird mentioned this on another thread: If you want shiped eggs to hatch they do need to sit for 12 + hours before putting in incubator.

I let my eggs sit in an egg carton on top of incubator, then set the carton in and slightly rock them, just a little tip by hand. Figured the whole buisines of turning is to let the egg know momma hen is there and to not stick, but grow grow grow. Just a working theory on that.

I settle shipped eggs for at least 24 hours and have had plenty of detached air cell eggs hatch. I will also put them in and not turn them for a few days if they're badly handled.

It's always a gamble but worth it in the long run. They can't hatch if you don't try.

. Yeah I put all the eggs in no matter what and I don't throw anything out that has been in less than 7 days. I actually have one RIR from crazypetlady hatching today that was detached. The other 5 never even started. So far the one has pipped and is starting to zip.

I give every egg a chance to hatch but most I have gotten were so scrambled/detached that they would never start. I do the same as you, I set them in the hatching tray in the egg trays for the first few days.

ok, a bit off topic maybe but i know how you all like to swap eggs... i'm not participating in the july swap, but just got 12+ pheasant eggs. all pure breeds but no idea what colors the eggs came from, he had them all in a bucket on the desk from the last 2-3 days. (some record keeping wonder the guy is...) anyways, is anyone interested in swapping these eggs for chicken/turkey/guinea eggs? if so PM me and maybe i can find someone with something i like. 8)

here's a pic from one of the pens
