Incubators Anonymous

None of the wiring is frayed. A few of the screws are rusted or corroded. It needs cleaned badly. It reeks of stale cigarette smoke. Should I clean what I can reach, or take it all apart and hope it works when I put it back together?

You could always just test it out on eggs that aren't high value...and see how it goes. I would probably just clean what I could reach, but I'm not handy and would be afraid I wouldn't be able to put it back together correctly, lol.

Well I think I might need to join this group. I'm only on my second hatch, but I possibly have a girl wanting me to hatch some for her right after these are done! Then after that we have the spring swap and I'll be getting hatching eggs...and then after that I want to hatch my own ducklings so......yeah. LOL

The group I have in now is due the 8th and 10th :D

WELL..... Me..... I would clean it as good as I could with q-tips and tooth bushes and what ever I needed. I would use OXINE (bleach would work) and spray he WHOLE interior and let it sit a few minutes then start cleaning. I am of the theory that even if the electrical stuff gets wet as long as it is TOTALLY DRY when you use it it would be ok. NOT that I would spray the motor or anything intentionally but it should be fine if you can really let it dry before firing it up. Most of the stuff in the incubator should be somewhat water proof or resistant anyway.

Welcome!

Quote: take apart what you can to clean it thoroughly... use simple green, it's 100% safe cleaner, won't harm plastics (amonia will). it also smells much better than cig smoke and should help the odors.

i wouldn't take any wiring apart, but i think you should disassemble as much as possible if you can't safely clean around it.

for my 'bators i just use soap and water, but then, i'm the only one who's ever used them. for something of questionable origin, i'd definitely simple green then soap and water it...

Question; I just discovered that my incubator has been running a touch on the cold side; roughly 98.5 F. How much will this slow down my hatch by or have I destroyed my hatch completely? I had noticed the eggs didn't look like they were developing quite as they should so I bought and calibrated a new thermometer (digital) and checked temps through an air vent/hole.

This is only my second hatch and I ended up running with one thermometer due to the first getting broken. I just didn't think this would happen, the two always agreed and the first batch was dead on, asside from the humidity issues that I worked out.

by a day or so in my experience... but i have found chicks cooked a bit faster seem stronger than ones that took longer... if anything my 'bator tends to run .25-.5 degree hotter at times. i usually get better than 50% of the hatch on day 20. (tomorrow for this group!) the rest on 21. anything that takes longer than that to hatch usually isn't very thrifty and doesn't last long.

My eggs are now on day 22. No pips but I did do a quick candle of just a couple eggs and saw they were trying to pip internally. And I heard a peep or two!! So no more touching now just sitting on my hands and waiting!!!

Thanks. I have one pip and one zip this morning. I am feeling more optimistic now.

Super excited!!! Day 7 and we done an ultrasound on (candled) the eggs this morning and all 35 eggs are fertilized and moving around like crazy !!!!! My 14 yr old daughter helped me and we couldn't believe all were progressing wonderfully!!! All the air pockets were in great shape also ! We think that the next 14 days will take forever.
