Incubators Anonymous

Quote: agreed. i can also get the humidity up quick if i have to open it, but if ihave eggs pipped/zipping, i'll do what i can to prevent opening it. if the humidity is down, i've got a squeeze bottle (ketchup/mustard type, pointed spout), crack the incubator open and give a good squeeze onto the paper towel lining. it's only open for 2-3 seconds, and only maybe a 1/2" crack.

ok well i have an update on my latest chick hatch. 8)

she's actually handling nearly 30 chicks without issues... today is day 5.

Just had an AWFUL hatch. I didn't get many wheatens to hatch and most died. I did save 3. I even lost most of my GNH someone volunteered to send me

I had 9 almost 10 chicks and all but 3 were dead this morning

I am going to make some changes to the hatcher QUICKLY. Just not sure what is going on. I can only guess it is either ventilation are hot spots. Suggestions are welcome. I have eggs going into lockdow on thursday.

Here are some pictures of it. The corner where the basket is is the KILLER CORNER. There are no ventilation holes on that side and no fan.

There are 2 ventilation holes at the top back. That little wall has a laptop cooling fan mounted on it.

See I told you

I have some small personal fans I can mount somewhere, just not sure where. I need something on the other end like holes.... but top or bottom? Should I mount a fan out side to pull the air OUT?

Other options are adding a section onto the hatcher..... either side or bottom. I feel like I need to move the baskets away from that corner if it is getting hot. OR I can just make a new one.... but not this week.
Oh Donna that is sooo sad. I have an old redwood cabinet bator that holds 400 eggs. The outside case is about 22"x39"x30 tall and of course smaller inside as the walls are pretty thick. There is a vent hole 1.5" across in the back in front of where the fan is to suck in fresh air. On the front top there are two more holes the same size. All three have little metal sliders on them so you can open or close off the opening. (I can post a close up if you want me to of the vent covers) I hope this helps and gives you some idea of what to do to modify yours. Tho that said, I'm thinking maybe you have a hot spot? Maybe put a thermometer where the basket was and see how hot it gets? I noticed in a styrobator if the thermometer was directly under the heat element it was always hotter than in the middle.

my first move would be to add ventilation AND fans... 12v powered computer fans (wired to used cell phone chargers) are very convenient and inexpensive... if you can find some 6-9v cell phone chargers, the fans won't turn so fast as to create a draft but more a gentle breeze. and i would have vent holes near the bottom on one end and the top on the other. convection should create air flow in/out, while the fans keep it mixing nicely.
