Ok, so I am torn between breeds. I know I want buckeyes, as I am from Ohio, but I cannot decide between BLRW or BCM. I am planning on building a bigger coop in the next couple of months and want to keep the breeds true. So that being said...any advice?

Marans are awesome for meat! In that way, they are a great dual purpose bird. I have never processed a BLRW, so I can't speak to those, but for meatiness Marans are great!

BCM are VERY Difficult to breed correctly. If I knew then what I know now, I would not get BCMarans. BLRW are not easy to breed for color or type either.

Good Shepard Barred Rocks are the BIGGEST and HEAVIEST birds I have... and Cuckoo Marans. The cuckoo are tricky too, but not nearly as much as BCM. Cuckoos have issues with egg color, lacking leg feathering, and gold leakage.

Wyandotte in general are meat birds. Whites seem to be huge too. I have some of them growing out and the size is impressive.

HELP!!! A big storm came through our area. Now I am Worried out of my mind and biting my nails with fear and anxiety!!!! The power was out for two days, but we had solar for one day, and then generator the next. BUT, my husband accidently diverted the power from my 3 table top Styrofoam incubators. I think they were down for about 3 hours. When I discovered that they were not running, temps were down to 83 degrees. I am just sick. One batch is due 3/26, one is due 3/29, and one 3/31. Has anyone ever had a power failure and still hatched chicks??? What are my chances?

If the air temp was 83 its likely the eggs were still much higher than that. Three hours is really not that long, and you may still hatch them just fine. I haven't personally, but I know people have posted on BYC about going through this and still having a decent hatch. All you can do is hang in there, there is hope! Definitely let us know how it goes!!

I would probably candle them and see if there is any movement. Unless they are dark eggs you should be able to get a good idea if they are still alive. Fingers crossed!

I have just read on two other threads about eggs hatching after cooling off. One was out of power for a day and a half, the other was unplugged for half a day. One hatched out chicks, the other is putting them into lockdown a day late. The only ones that did not do well were the ones actually pipping to hatch when the power went off. The pipped chicks and newborns got too cold to dry off and the humidity dropped.

I had a broody who kicked some eggs to the side of the nest, and when I checked on her the eggs were cool to the touch. I almost took them away, but I decided to come back later and get them. When I went back they were all under her again, and all those eggs hatched.

I would just keep an eye on them - check them when you think they are ready to hatch and maybe let them wait a day longer if they don't look ready just then. I have also heard of people hatching chicks in the turner with it still going... its amazing how hearty they can be.

dont worry. they will be fine. i have 22 eggs going into lockdown today following 5 hours without power day 7
