Any suggestions for what to use to label/number marans eggs? Sharpie? Paint pen? I made myself a nerdy spreadsheet so I can keep track of what goes on with each egg since I am not hatching on the scale some of you are, and to help me trouble-shoot any problems I'm having.

Those are really dark - maybe a paint pen would work? White or something. Does anybody here use paint pens?

well, give me a holler later in the year if you decide to add red and silver grey dorkings, or bantam cochins (mille fleur, bbs mottled - growing out silver laced)
I sure will.I tried to get silvers last trip but was let down at the last minute by Dick Horstman.

I have 36 red and colored dorkings in the incubator over there now.

i've just seen pencil, myself. it's fairly readable IMO. that's what i use on all my own eggs. but then i don't have any super dark layers either. only shipped eggs i've received.

what about a white or yellow crayon? I've been using different colors of crayon to mark the X & O on mine according to the hatch date, so I can make sure to move them to the hatching tray when I'm supposed to.

I use a sharpie on all my eggs. Cant see much else on marans..... plus it will not come off it it gets wet. I have used art penciles..... but lose them before i can even sharpen them.... white pencil works well.

I started raising animals to eat just so I could opt out of the system. I'm not totally away from the grocery store but get closer every year. Now that I have so many chickens, chicken meat & eggs are crossed off the list. I do eat old hens and roosters because what else would you do with them. They make really good broth for soup. I don't name most of my chickens anyway, tho some of them have acquired names, usually it is some version of Fried Chicken or Swims with Dumplings

It helps to not name them and decide from the get go that some are going to be eaten. When my kids were little and I had dairy goats all the boy kids were named BBQ, the pigs were always named Porkchops & Bacon, They were only allowed to name their special pet rabbits, not any of the others in the barn. My kids were running around and watching me butcher and sometimes helping from a young age. I think that is the kind of life we need to get back to. Sorry for the off topic ramble

I totally agree. Thank you for sharing

I don't have kids yet but that is what I envision for my family when I do. As self sufficient as we possibly can be, pets are pets but livestock have a purpose other than being cute...

Quilters use a white or yellow quilting pencil to mark black or dark fabric. Would do well on dark eggs. Get at fabric or quilt stores.

I use sharpies as well with no ill effects! I'm pretty sure the majority of them are nontoxic now. It should say it on the marker!
