Incubators Anonymous

Hello Amy here. I have been hatching for a couple of months. At first I was doing great at hatching duck eggs....now I suck at it. I have no idea whats going on. I am currently selling all my duck eggs but still hatching geese, turkey, quail, button quail, and standard cochin. My hatch rate is pretty good if I can keep the grandbaby out of the incubator.....except duck eggs!

Nice to meet you all :) Some of you I recognize from around the board. ...Hi!

I will be setting around 36+ eggs next week, is anyone else going to be setting eggs next week?
I have read so much on Marans possibly being harder to hatch, However many say well there is nothing different it's an egg like any other. Wondering if the dark shell has anything to do with it?

Anyway, I'll be setting cochins, cochin x's, Wheaten/Blue Wheaten AMs, BBS Marans, and Olive Eggers. :)
What will everyone else be setting in the recent future?

I'll be setting Marans this weekend, hopefully about 18, maybe even friday if my girls lay quick enough.. I"m not expecting a great hatch, they are new pullet eggs and i had to rescue some from the refrigerator so let's see.... They are BCM's by the way..

I just sanitized my incubator after hatching 4 duck eggs. I'm already perusing fertile eggs online while the ducklings cover my bathtub in wet mash. You would think that after a 100% hatch rate on these 4 eggs that I should be satisfied and put the incubator to rest.

I need to hatch more eggs.......

It all started a few years ago, and now, 8 incubators later!!!! I've got...real troubles! lol where to put all those darling chicks ?
Is there help? My biggest problem is what breed to start next! (does that qualify me for psych therapy?)
Oops, gotta go! I hear pips...

so glad to have the support of so many fellow hatch-a-holics

I would recommend dry incubating your Marans. They are much harder to hatch at humidity levels people normally use. Keep your normal level for lockdown but you want it around 20% for the first 18 days.

Wow - welcome to all the newly admitted Hatch-a-holics. I guess that email from BYC really created an interest in this thread, first time I have had to read through 7 pages to catch up!

Great stories there, just be aware that this thread does not aim to CURE this addiction - we ENABLE it!

Some ways to enable the addiction:

Show you where to find eggs you want to hatch (Rare breeds, mixed breeds, etc..)
Give suggestions on where to sell chicks that you don't want to keep (feedstores, neighbors, relatives, ads on Craig's List)
Suggestions for better hatching to get you closer to that 100% hatch...
Suggestions for which incubator worked for us, what humidity we use..etc... etc..
Innovative ideas on home made hatchers, brooders, pens.. etc...

WELCOME!

I'm a hatch-aholic too. Been hatching eggs for the past 25 years. This year I finally broke down and bought a "store bought" incubator. Despite the new one, I'm also using my most recent home built one.....just in case!

I completed my 3rd hatch last weekend, and have 2 "orphaned" eggs due this weekend.

I also bought my 1st turner and 2nd incubator today...

April 29th I'll be setting 4+doz eggs for my 4th hatch!

Here are some pics of a few of the chicks I hatched.
