Ki4got-- I was thinking of giving a broody a few chicks , well more like10-12. Now that they are a few days old, will she accept them?? THis is my first time giving chicks to a broody, usually I'm taking the chicks. LOL
this is 'smee's girl' (yeah, smee's my bantam blrw roo). she went broody about a week ago, this pic was taken 3 days ago. obviously, while the chicks may be new to her, they're not new chicks.

yellow band is a weeble baby, pink band ee/dorking. there's one blrw in the mix (lf, not hers) and a couple sandhill preservation center dorking chicks.

this is her first brooding trial, and she's done ok, tho she did manage to damage (and bury) a couple, kicking them while digging for food in the shavings... but she's learning.

Haahaa-- they do need to learn. My best broody is not in broody mode. Currently an OE ( maran-EE) is sitting in a box dreaming of chicks. Figured to give her speckled sussex. and she can teach them about free ranging.

Oz-- what plugs into the hydrostate? THe dehumidifier? Do you see as diff in room humidity v. inside the incubator??
the dehumidifier plugs into hydrostat. both will sit in my bator. In "trials" in the USA I could get the humidity down to 30% in an incubator at temp 99.5 an environment that was 80% at 88F,

Most people here are trying to get humidity up - I have the opposite problem

Quote: I find the hen an amazing creature that she can prove the correct humidity no matter the ambient conditions. Incredible creature. Very clever ofyou to work out this method to decrease the RH to a successful level. Kudos.
  • trying to fall asleep with chicks hatching in my bedroom. another must have just broken free. noisy little buggers

The chicks in my brooder cheep none stop, except at night. THis is a first. THey are usually very quiet and I have to go look to see if they are getting into trouble. SOrt of like children. lol Hope you get enough sleep.

So, I'm obsessing vicariously through my BIL now. After I put my eggs under my broody, I took the incubator and remaining eggs over to his house so he could have a more stable box to hatch HIS eggs (from my coop) in. Today is day 19 and he has 2 pips already (out of my banty mix and maybe silkie before she went broody). Now to exercise my self control and NOT go peek under my little miss Fluffy to see how my precious eggs are doing.
