Incubators Anonymous

I too must not know where all thechicks come from, I have 3 1588 incubators set at different temps trying to figure out what is best. I have had poor results and am trying to learn all I can before next year, any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Rn

I'm Vanessa and I'm a hatchaholic. It's been 2 months since my last hatch. My bators are off and clean, out of sight. BUT, my LF cochin pullet just went broody so I slipped some silkie eggs around her and she pushed them underneath. Is this a relapse?

We can be hatcholics together if you like my eggs will be here tomorrow and I will set on Saturday. The 14-16 are best days to set chicken eggs according to the Old Farmers Almanac. I goes by the moons cycles.

Okay I am pretty sure that any hatching problems I am having has nothing to do with my incubator. Out of the 41 eggs I had in there I have had to take 10 out due to early demise, blood ring or infertility.

Here are the stats right now though.

1. Stacy Tate eggs: 14 shipped one broken on arrival, one stinker, one early death probably like day 4 or 5, 3 blood rings (one looked cracked so wonder if it dried out) and two infertile.

That leaves me with 9 eggs with babies growing in them that are all on track for lockdown on the 20th.

2. Nancy Garry eggs: 12 were shipped all arrived safely three were early quitters day 1 or 2 had veining but then lost it and didn't develop and three were blood rings (one I think was a twin or triplet there were three black spots in the middle and a blood ring from them around the egg.)

That leaves 6 eggs with babies that are on track to hatch in a little over a week.

3. Last but not least I stuck 16 of my eggs into the mix just because I was curious about fertility. Last candling I marked a bunch with ? because I wasn't sure if they were on track (I couldn't see any movement in the egg but could see lots of veining) Today is day 11 and I see great big babies who have the hiccups and are moving like crazy.

All of these eggs are growing and on track the only 2 I am concerned with are overly large pullet eggs and the eggs might be too big to hatch out.

So that is 16 out of 16 so far growing and on track to hatch.

And yes once again I am a confirmed addict. I love the science of hatching eggs and increasing my hatching percentage. I also love taking care of and "taming" the little babies so when they grow up they follow everyone around the yard. It freaks some people out though lol.

The sure sign that I am an addict was when my friend said that she thought she should send my profile into the show Animal Hoarders on Animal Planet. She said you started out with the idea to just get a few chickens for eggs and now you have so many that you are selling the eggs and eating the chickens and yet you are still hatching.

I tried to tell her I can't be a hoarder because I don't hatch every egg, I do sell some of the roosters and hens and heck.....well I guess I am kind of a hoarder lol.

but so in a good way no animals were harmed in the support of my addiction.

Okay 48 eggs in The bator. 50 eggs under broodies. One turkey male on 12 geese eggs. So I guess I'm an hatchaholic. Lots of babies going home with many neighbors.

Hmmm I didn't think of that the neighbors don't have chickens yet time to hatch the master plan to turn my neighborhood into a chicken haven hehe.

I sold a bunch of chicks today, and about 5 more hatched! I haven't looked in the Bator yet tonight, so you never know. I picked about 36 more eggs, and some of them really need to go in the bator;-)

Well yesterday was a big day! Found a clutch of eggs my new layers hide from me.... and BOTH olive eggers are laying and I think the other rock. Then today they all laid in one nest it was pretty! Then I saw the new blue egg! Only one hold out from that group. Was so excited

So I thought I would just check one more time and thought I would look in the babies nest box.... and low and behold there it was my first MARANS egg! at 20 weeks

But I have more coming when they start laying for her.

I did not really candle my eggs on the bottom rack but two that I looked at looked good. I have 8 more Rocks a week behind these eggs so I will check them all Sunday.

Good luck on your secret clutch!
