I read someplace here to do that.  I think it had to to with the air sack.  Sorry I don't really remember.  Also, I like them in the crate......it has lots of open areas for circulation of air.....because the chicks that hatch don't kick the other eggs around.

I may have to cut holes in the bottom of some egg cartons and try that. Last time it drove me nuts that the new babies were knocking the other eggs around everywhere. Made me nervous! And I had 2 die in the eggs after some had hatched and always wondered if that was y. They were not shrink wrapped or anything, and had already pipped. So, I'll have to figure out something like that!!

My Genisis is out for delivery today!!!!! UPS usually comes here around 4pm! It'll be a LONG day!! I cracked open a few turkey eggs last night and they r looking fertile, so I will have to add some tomorrow after I get the new bator all set up!! My 1st turkey eggs! I'm soooo happy that I will now have a bator AND a hatcher! Now I won't have to wait 3 whole weeks to set more eggs!!! Yay!!!!

pictures from ebay auctions... I use either the 30-egg flat or 12 or 18 egg cartons (lid and flap removed) depending how many eggs are hatching.

the Hovabator will hold a 30 and a 12 if necessary, but I've had chicks try to go between them and the wall and get stuck. usually I set them roughly in the middle of the hatcher.

I hatched my first batch of incubated eggs around Valentine's day, and immediately put more eggs in. I have a staggered clutch going right now for practice with less-than ideal hatching conditions, and I'm already planning the next hatch--I'll be doing it as part of an educational class for a local after school program, and a class of grade-school kids will get to watch the eggs develop and eventually hatch.

I fear I may be hooked.

Update on my scrambled welsummer eggs. Day 21 and no sign of life...... One split at around 14 days but luckily the insides just slid down and didn't go everywhere. I managed to clean that up and kept on hoping. I've not been able to see anything by candling because the shells are so dark.
I take it that a sort of sloshy sound in the eggs when I move them is not a good thing. Normally if I pick them up at day 21 I can hear chirping or tapping, not sloshing :(
I think I might open them tomorrow to see if there is any sign of development at all.

Good job I have another 28 in the other incubator to keep me happy :)
