Incubators Anonymous

Some people that hatch for others just keep like half the hatch, but whatever works. I had a lady hatching for me at one point, I just took her a bag of chicken feed each time she hatched a bunch. Now I have my own cabinets. I was trying to get $2-3 for basic chicks but I live outside the city and the chicks just weren't selling. The thing is to move them out before you invest too much in feed.

Put 25 Blue, Black, Splash, and White Orpington Bantam eggs into lockdown. Hatch Day Thursday.

I sold a few chicks to custom hatches last year. I sold the baby chicks for $3.00 each. Guinea Keets $4.00 each. Laying hens for $15.00 each, roosters usually free. I never take less than $1.00 an egg, but I usually sell most of the eggs for $2.00 each, and up. Depending on the breed.

I've got 9 in the brooder, 5 production reds and 4 rhodies. Had 10 total but lost one post hatch. Bators are sitting empty in corner of garage. They look sad, or is it just me. I have to take a break from incubating but not sure for how long. In the mean time I'm going to upgrade my LG with a fan so I can operate it in a wider temp range in the garage. I may also take egg crate foam and make a jacket for my LG to prevent heat loss, my brother forgets to close the door. Going to use my Hova-Bator as the hatcher. Must get some sleep. God bless and hatch on.

If you don't sell them what do you do with them? You hatch a TON of chicks.

I keep them if I don't sell them, but I almost always sell them. Chickens are very popular around here. People are getting into raising chickens to produce organic eggs, meat birds, and of course, eggs for their own table. I might have about 24 chicks right now, including some silkies I will grow out. Once I hatch 24 RIR I call the guy and he comes to get them. I have four portable brooders and three built ins, but only have chicks in one right now. Heck, I need to sell a lot of chicks and eggs to support my chicken addiction!:-D

Had like 15 chicks hatch this morning, I opened the cabinet door and they fell plop into the dish pan with shavings in it sitting on the floor under the door. I hate when they fall on the concrete floor, so now they have a safe landing zone! Then I went to the styrofoam Bator to check humidity and two chicks had hatched out a day early! I just love seeing those babies!
