Ohh! Can I ask a quail question? Can I hatch and release? Or do they need to be taken care of?
Interesting.... I think you would need to take care of them some... but that is what most people do with them, I think.

I have coturnix, which i recommend due to their calm nature. I do not recommend hatch and release, it may even be illegal in some states. If you were planning to do that, i would suggest a native species like bobwhite. They are much more aggressive towards each other, and more flighty.
coturnix wont go broody, native quail release is normally illegal. you may even need a permit to breed themOhh! Can I ask a quail question? Can I hatch and release? Or do they need to be taken care of?

legal or otherwise, coturnix are NOT broody so releasing them would just be a death sentence, since they would lay lots of eggs that never hatch and they'd just die out.I have coturnix, which i recommend due to their calm nature. Yes, they are cold hardy, and when I had a light on them, they laid even in winter. Check out the quail threadSee... I need to read BEFORE I get them..... gives me time to build a pen. Are they cold hardy? I can keep them in my shop if needed.
