Incubators Anonymous

I have a batch that's supposed to be hatching today. This is my 2nd hatch. my 1st was mostly unsuccessful: I had 3 hatch out of 38, and 2 of the ones that hatched died within 24 hours.

This time, I monitored the humidity much more carefully. Before lockdown I had several I could see moving when I candled them. But today is day 21, and no pips. Any ideas? Humidity was kept at approx 45%, and I boosted it to approx 70% on Sunday. Temp has been at 99-100.

Thanks,
Beth

Hi there. I got 25 out of 32 eggs April 2nd. All Necked Necks. That was my first incubating ever. I was lucky I guess. Would like to know where to get different breed of eggs. I want some eggs of a breed of duck that has frizzly feathers. I don't know the name of them. Can anyone help me?

Hi,

I had my first hatch in the Easter hatch along and even though I had a tough time with my losses I have learned a lot. Now I have two dozen Cochin and Cochin mix eggs on the way and then next week ordering another dozen mix pack of pure wheaten/blue wheaten ameracaunas, BBS marans, and olive eggers then for a little while until I weed out all the ones I don't want to keep I will order more :) ...I have some other well loved breeds in mind and I would like a whole separate coop and pens to breed and possibly show silkies but I would like to get all of these set up and weeded through before I start on my silkie project :)
For those that don't know I also have 9 heritage RIRs and 4 silkies chicks around 2wks old in the brooder. Can't wait for next week to get started again!

i would say #1, your humidity is way too high (IMO). my best hatches have been incubated at between 10-20% humidity and up to 55-60 for the last 3 days only.

anything higher during incubation, the eggs can't lose enough liquid for the chicks to hatch normally. the chicks suck in all that fluid, which puts stress on the heart and developing lungs. in addition, they're so swollen they can't hatch normally because they can't move inside the shell.

increasing humidity is essential the last 3 days of development, because without it, the chicks will stick to their shells while hatching and become 'shrink wrapped', or glued in.

Hello
My name is Betty and I'm a hatchaholic. First I set 4 NN eggs and got 4 out of 4(only 2 NNs ). Now I have 7 speckled Sussex set,6 are moving well with 3 days till lock-down. Due to a bad shipment of not so live chicks I have 40 eggs on order, and am still looking for blue/green/olive layers and a few silkies.I think I might need help.lol

Hi Betty,

Not to be an enabler but look at this classified... This is blue, olive and chocolate layers... Pure marans, ameracaunas and a mix of ameracaunas x marans to make olive eggers :) really can't be beat for $42 (that's with shipping added!)

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...ucana-bbs-marans-olive-eggers-buy-it-now/0_40

These will be shipped to me sometime next week when I place the order as soon as I can this weekend or Monday. Beautiful birds and eggs!!!
