So I was wondering, the chick with the green butt...was it stuck in the shell awhile? Maybe it pooed before it got out? and it's just that first really green goo poo that they have?

its under the skin though!it was trapped in the shell and i helped it out but can poop go all over under the skin like that.

no, it won't... what you're seeing is just his organs thru the thin skin. it's normal until the skin dries out and toughens up a bit.

you my friend are an enabler! I just hatched 14 mutt chickens. Have one call duck egg incubating and 5 saxony eggs with 10 more coming in the mail this week. And i may have two other call duck eggs that might just get "mixed in" with the ones coming in the mail

I haven't figured out how to start my own post, so please forgive me for cutting it. U gave a question. I am on day 15 of my first incubation, and they are jersey giants. The shells are very dark and I unable to see much if anything. I thought they were all duds until today when I dropped one while candling. I see that it had a baby inside

. Has anyone been able to start two different batches of eggs at different times in one bator? Does the lockdown period prohibit this?

This is done all the time, but they have two units. One that continues to incubate (that has the turner going all the time) and one unit just to hatch in. People will put eggs in every week, take out the ones that will go into lockdown and put those in another "hatching" only incubator with no turner. As soon as the chicks hatch, they clean it very well and then when the next weeks ones go into lockdown they transfer them again. Did I make sense tell this??????

Well, if it says day 1 to 18-20 weeks.. today is day 1 for the newborn

and day two for the others... Day 0 would be still in the egg.

Also, instead of crushing the food you can mix it with warm water and a little bit of apple cider vinegar. Put enough water to cover all the food and once it all absorbs put it in the feed tray (plastic) sprinkle just a teeny bit of small dry stuff on top. I found it keeps them from scattering all the dry stuff out of the feed tray. I also started them in the cap from a jar, since moved up to a regular food tray. I have been feeding all mine wet now instead of dry. If you ferment it (lots of water, keep it warm and wait until it smells like bread baking and bubbles, keep adding more food/water/vinegar after you take half of it out) it lasts for days. If you don't ferment it replace it every two or three days or it will mold...

Ummmmm, that almost sounds like I would like some, too! Especially the part about the smells like bread baking!

Idk how rare it is, but I had one in my first hatch that was about bald because it got NO feathers except maybe feet feathers and it's down pretty much couldn't cover his/her body! LOL He/she did finally feather out and is LOVELY but we still can't tell if it's a boy or girl! lol

The chick just inherited the slow feathering gene. Its normal. Here is one of my young roos. He is 10 weeks old in this photo! Still has baby fuzz!

He is now about 13 weeks old and has finally lost a lot of that fuzz, has much more developed wattles and red comb!

oh no this isnt my chick i got this online its to give an idea pretend its more naked with yellow wet feather and green tint on its rear!

Sounds like poo. I have heard some people say their chicks have poop on them when they hatch. I think it looks fine, too! Cute little sweetie! Are you a first time chick mom??
