Incubators Anonymous

I'm getting impatient. None of the eggs that pipped this morning have done anything else since then. We're going on 8 hours of no visible activity. Gaah!!!

I didn't get the nest box closed off in time and my polish hen jumped in there to lay and broke and killed one of my Marans eggs. I'm pretty ticked about it. I've had the most awful luck with Marans (had one killed by our dog, another prolapsed severely and we had to cull it this winter, my incubator quit and I had 11 dead in shell chicks as a result, and now this) and I've only got 3 more Marans eggs left. 2 are pipped and stalled in the incubator. Humidity and temps look fine, so I know I should just be patient. The only thing I might do is pull the silkie that pipped in the wrong end and check to see if its still alive and possibly try to assist. I was really hoping to slip a chick or 2 under grumpy-broody tonight. :/

Hello, my name is Lenna and I am a hatching addict. So far this year I have put my poor old (20 yrs and counting) Little Giant to work hatching out about a dozen Golden Lakenvelders, a couple of dozen Americaunas, five Call Ducks, two Mystery Geese, etc. My latest hatch did not go well, I think the eggs were too old, plus I got a text from the breeder asking if I got any because she was thinking maybe her roo was getting infertile. *sigh* She didn't get any either, so at least I know it's not me, or the 'bator. I should have had peeps this past Thursday, but I am giving up and pitching the last 10 in the 'bator that still looked promising, we are going to have to call this one a loss. So, I don't have any new peeps at the moment, and I can't start a new batch right now because I have to fly out of town for two weeks towards the end of the month. Our local sale where I usually get my hatching eggs won't be on until next Saturday, and that would put the eggs hatching the day after I get to Houston. I have found myself looking at Ebay, thinking, you know, if I could get those eggs here by Weds they would make it just in time... Oh, yes, I am in trouble. I am even in the process of rewiring a Sportsman 1202 so that I can hatch MORE when I get home... Thanks for inviting me! I guess maybe I can get my 'chick fix' by looking at pics of what you guys are doing in lockdown!

i feel your pain.

its going to be a long time before your next hatch

be brave

I refuse to answer how many incubators I have on the grounds I may incriminate myself

So funny! My husband would have a fit if he knew that I was looking for a fourth or one that would take the place of all these together. Hey, that sounds like an even better idea. Except, then I'd have several bigger ones...

Off to float test this morning. I'm REALLY hoping that my broody managed to hatch another 1 or 2, and that they didn't quit. If her eggs are done, she's getting all of the chicks. I attempted to put chicks under my other broody and she definitely will NOT be getting any. Ugh.

Today is day 19. I usually have at least one that pips on day 19. Nothing this time. I know it's early and I'm impatient. Hurry, hurry, hurry- and be healthy please.

you sound like me last year had 4 little giants, 2 other foam bators. I purchase a brinsea that held 24 eggs. Then a Dickie bator came up 4 sale only used 3 months. I bought myself a birthday present. LOL. i went crazy chicks very where. Love the hatching part. Than did egg topies to see why the other didn't hatch.
My 40 + children where beginning to worry about my chicken habit. So I sold all my foam bators for $175. My children were very proud of me. It was hide in my bedroom....They had not seen the Dickie Bator (It hold lots of eggs) They thought I just had the 24 Brinsea. Fooled them. LOL Plus with the money I made on the foam Bators I could buy some more eggs.
I promise myself I wouldn't go crazy this year RIGHT WRONG I turn the bator in March It is still on. I keep sayJust one more hatch RIGHT.
I am going to figure out this shipped egg thing if it kills me.
THINK I am horrible addicted but it is fun......
So newbies be care hatching gets in your blood. And there is some many breeds to hatch and then there is 1/2 breeds thats real fun too. Be careful Bye

Ok so the bator's a brat. Think I'm gonna have to look for a new one. If I open it to change the humidity the temp drops and won't go back up unless I tell it to. Can't candle the eggs unless the temp spikes, otherwise it falls too far. Grr..
Also thinking, when the hens who are being brats and not laying start laying, I'd have like 20 eggs a day, 2 days my little foam bator would be full, I could sell so many chicks, but maybe some Balut too. Anyone ever sell Balut ? How much do you price?
Oh is it just duck? People don't eat chick? We have a lot of ethnic markets here, shockingly. Idk, what y'all think of selling Balut? Wether I hatch the chicks or not, I'd get more money then selling as food eggs
