Incubators Anonymous

Hello all
frow.gif

I'm not sure I can be classified as an 'addict' yet, but reading this thread and judging my anticipation, I expect it probably won't be long before I too am hooked.
I DID start at the beginning of the thread but after reading the first 60 pages, decided to skip to the last 10 pages as it was just too exciting reading all those old posts about fluffy little chickies and there were soooooo many more pages to read through.

I have spent all week clucking over our new (and first) incubator. Testing it and calibrating the temperature etc, getting it ready for the (hopefully) arrival of fertile eggs when hubby comes home from work in a couple days.
I don't remember needing to calibrate my hen in the past years though!

If I'm successful and human controlled incubating is anywhere near as addicting and rewarding as raising day-olds, I have no doubt that I will be awarded the official certification of 'incubating addict'. You lot have taken off since starting this thread!! and I suspect that it's due to the high number of enablers, partner's in crime and cute fluffy chick pics and chatter going on in here!

Just these past couple days I have caught myself calculating how many chickies I'd need to hatch to get a good ammount of roo's for the self grown menu next year. Is it bad that I've yet to actually incubate and I'm considering the need for a second incubator and possibly a third incubator to utilise as a hatcher??
I think I have the makings of an addict and I certainly do feel that if just reading 60 pages was enabling enough for me, then subscribing to this thread is just asking for trouble with the hubby

Thankyou to all those who have posted advice and links in here. I've had some great reading today to get me thinking and hopefully improving my plan of attack.

Thankyou Lawatt, for posting your chickie hatching video :) It kept my girls entertained for 15 minutes as they watched and rewatched the chick hatching on screen, 'ooh-ing', 'aah-ing' and 'awwwwe-ing', instead of hovering over my empty 'bator and asking "How long until the chicks hatch?".
I can see our data allowance getting used up in the next few weeks, on chick hatching video's, just to get a little peace from the constant repeat of question LOL.

It seems that incubators are just as magnetic to littlies as a mummy on the toilet.
In fact, next time I need the loo, I may just ask the girls to go check and see if any eggs are pipping yet and to count and make sure that all of them are still in there. (should buy me enough time right?)

Here's hoping for a decent first time experience and many more addicts and enablers in the future of this thread

Welcome to the thread, and I think your idea for distracting the kids is GREAT!

And yes, if you are already anticipating needing more incubators - then you already would be considered an official "incubator addict" Perhaps look at building a larger one? There are several good articles on DIY incubators and bigger ones hold the temperatures better

This is definitely not the thread to cure you of the disease - we just make sure you get your "fix"!

Well my bator is up and running again. I am setting 5 serama and 5 RIR mix breeds. All are from my own hens I hope local eggs do better than shipped.

Haha thanks guys.
I was worried that might be the case ChickNmamma, worried for my marriage more than anything
tongue.png

I'm already in trouble for converting the old woodshed to a chickl shed and discussing the options of converting the garden shed and possibly turning the top paddock into one large rotational free ranging system..... you think with 90 acres, I'd be allowed at least 5 of them for just chickens right? Maybe if I threaten to take over the MANshed??!!
smack.gif
hehehe

A bigger 'bator you say? Don't tempt me! LOL
I'll get to hatching successfuly first, THEN I can think bigger if I want to (pfft who am I kidding, there'll be no 'IF'...) when I'm ready to
Our new 'bator has a 48 hen egg capacity and with 3 young kids and the property to tend to, I decided to go with an auto turner.
If this year proves successful and as addictive for me as I suspect, I may look to some of the larger cabinet style auto turning incubators I've seen advertised around this way.
Unless one can be built with an auto turner??
Ssssshhh brain. We're not at that point yet, don't get too excited that you get ahead of yourself. One step at a time.

Exozpat, I was reading your island chick hatching story and kudos to you man. A legend in your own rights IMO
I'm happy to see that your second round is going fairly well too.
Good luck and all the best wishes to you, your family and your community on your project. I'm sure a good supply of meat chickens will do wonders for the community in the off season months and hopefully for the fish numbers too. Let's hope your poultry stay safe and breed like, well, chickens I suppose.

I was looking for cat or dog carriers at the thrift store and my mother asked me why I wanted them, I don't have a cat (any more) and only one dog. I said.. chickens!
