Incubators Anonymous

Thank you. Me too. She hasn't eaten in a day, but somehow, even though she can't hold up her head - she laid an egg again today. I'm giving her water with a syringe to keep her hydrated. At least I've got a part of her in the incubator if she doesn't make it.

As a sussex lover--- now that the girls have started laying again, how long with they lay before quitting ?

I don't know, I hatched them in December and they are beautiful bird's, I could not be more pleased. So now I play the year game......For me that is try the breed for a year after laying and see if I like them or not. I already have enough seasonal layer's with the turkey's.

Yes, my turkeys just stopped laying. A month longer than previous year. Not sure what that means.

I was curious about he sussex as they are supposed to be a winter layer. But honestly all my breeds are winterlayers. Summer is a chanllenge for the broodies; and the fall is low. Guess I should mark the hens that are laying right now.

Ok all I know this is unrelated...but I really have a problem!!! There is a egg that is litteraly stuck in the plastic yellow egg turner!! I have tried water to get it out and that does not work! I would force it out, but I have very healthy eggs in there with chicks and I don't want it to mess with my hatch. Sooooo does anyone know how to get a sticky egg out of a turner without breaking it?

sigh.....

Thanks for any and all advice!

I don't have experience with what you have but when I have an egg that has gone bad and is stuck I move all the other egg to another try before I start working with it. if you can't do that short term the water will work but you will have to let it work. try a papertowel under it to get the humidity up to loosen it. sorry not much help....huh?

Try some vinegar. Let it set for about 5 minutes and try to wiggle it off. You may have to repeat the steps a couple of times. You may want to drape a blanket over the other eggs to keep them warm and if the worse happens and that egg breaks then they won't get splashed. You can soak cotton balls with the vinegar and just pack it around the bad egg to let it soften up the goo.

I would sacrifice the egg as its probably dead.

remove the turner and then soak it all but the motor. Dry it and replace it. the eggs remaining will be ok for a while on their side in the bator

replacement egg rails. i always have a few extras...

remove the good eggs to the side, take the rail out put a clean one in and put the eggs back in it. can be done during incubation in just a few minutes. the other eggs won't suffer and incubator will get back up to temp quickly (don't adjust anything temp wise!)

then I take the rail with the stuck egg outside away from the house and thump the rail on something semi-solid to pop the egg out... if it's a stinker, outside is good. LOL

Agreed. I've had to do this in the past - worked perfect. Now I have a replacement egg turner in case it happens again.

i never knew this!! well i am a beginner now i know. Poor guy (Mr. Twizzler) was unceremoniously relegated to a giant dog crate for
now to shed his feathers in peace, meanwhile the young upstart backup roo (Mr. Sawtooth) gets to show his stuff and moved up the the big girls house... I hope they are nice to him LOL!!!

it's all go around here... tomorrow the Wheatens who are on strike anyway, are being moved to their own new pen, and King Arthur will be joining them.. i'm hoping a pen of their own and a new boyfriend might help them lay some eggs. I also decorated their coop with christmas lights to see if a little mood lighting would help

I have not yet seen Mr. Sawtooth doing the rooster thing? i'm a bit worried it would be really sucky to have two roos not able to make babies.. putting some eggs in the bator tonight to see if i get development but i am not hopeful..

I am wondering if the hens are being hard to get... i see some interest on his part but he never seems to actually do the deed..

Meanwhile, the wheatens are still on strike apparently they don't care much for christmas lights ...
