Incubators Anonymous

They didn't/don't look that bad to me. I have seen much worse hatch under a broody hen - and she pooped on them.. twice... broody poop! I didn't touch them and they were fine. You don't even want to see what ducks incubate and hatch - ewwwww. Just do NOT wash the eggs! That is a sure way to drive the bacteria into the egg and kill it. I think you knew that because you only scraped off the stuck on stuff - so they should be fine.

Okay thank you.
I really wasn't trying to be rude or upset anyone, I honestly didn't know if it could effect the hatch rate of other eggs.  And defintely wasn't trying to put down the seller (I didn't even say where I bought them...)

I am not upset....sorry you were but really they will be fine. I have hatched some way dirtier and they hatched just fine.

Well my accidental mutt eggs are done hatching. I'm impressed with the hybrid vigor. Great hatch rate, big fat chicks, and no compications. And they are so cute.

Quote: I support donna in this... I've received eggs from her before, some dirty some not so, and hatched dirty eggs of my own, all without a problem. depends entirely on the birds and the pen. my cochins are always spotless, some of the dorkings are clean, others aren't. if it's raining, there's always mud on the eggs from dirty feet going in and out of the nests.

Ducthbunny,
Do you have a seperate bator? Better safe than sorry. I tried some simular to those and got very bad results. Lost the whole batch (42 eggs) from several suppliers. Bacteria had spread causing DIS at day 19 or 20. Now I always set each supplier in seperate bators to minimize loss. Good luck.

Experienced hatchers I need advice!!!!

I got some eggs in the mail today and they were the DIRTIEST eggs I have ever seen! My hens have never laid eggs with that much poo on them and I have never received mail order eggs that literally had excrement caked to them!

After 30 min of gently brushing with a dry sponge, I got some off, but they still have poop all over them. (Photo is an AFTER photo!!!!)

Is it okay to even incubate these? I know eggs are porous and blood rings comes from bacteria in the egg. I have other (expensive!) eggs going in (Isbar, Blue Favorelles, Marraduna Basque) and I was wondering if they we be at risk for putting such dirty eggs in with them. It seems like adding poop to an incubator would be a playground of bacteria!!!

Input???

I get good hatches from Donna as well.. i got some leghorn eggs from her that were so big they
would not fit in the hatching tray... got something like a 65% hatch rate with shipped eggs..

I have tried washing dirty eggs from my own hens and the only time i have had rotten eggs
and exploders are when i have tried to wash them...

I think these eggies will do fine!!

Insanity-- cute chicks, do you know what the mixes are? I only have one bator (though I received almost a dozen more than I was anticipating so I may need one to get all the eggs to fit!!!) I will probably toss the real dirty ones so I have room to fit them all in and keep separated and give it a try. I just wanted to check with the experienced hatchers to make sure it was okay before I just put them in with the rest. Early on in my hatching I lost almost all of mine to blood rings about a week or so in and was told from here it's because of bacteria. Wanted to be sure dirty eggs wouldn't cause my others to die of blood rings. And since these were by far the cheaper of the eggs going in (got 20 or so for under $30 and paid $46 for 4 Blue Isbar) if one had to be sacrificed I would rather it be these.

Thanks everyone for the input, I will put them in this morning (let them rest overnight to reduce air bubbles)

We all need more incubators. Now you have a good reason to go buy one.....any reason is a good one. That's why I ended up with 3- 2 for hatching and 1 for 48 hr brooder.
My mutts came from RIR,Barred Rock, and Leghorn hens and no clue what the roo was. Surprises are the best
