I had 16 delivered and 4 of those were not fertile. 3 of my belgian bantams, which are new layers. What makes them not fertile. I have lots to learn... I never knew I would get into chickens but I am already hooked in my second year.

Eggs that don't develop does not mean they are not fertile. Anything can cause them to not start. Some are clear from lack of fertility too.... but not ALL.

This is an important factor in shipped eggs

from the data you will see that eggs fail more in batches. its not always the supplier as i have hatched from some with lousy numbers before - its how they were handled on the way - but it could be old eggs, cold ehhs, hot eggs

btw 52 hatched and i am over the moon

oz, on your columns, is anticipated how many you expected to receive or how many you actually set? then confirmed, meaning confirmed fertile? I'm a bit confused...

I track # of eggs received/set, # fertile/growing at 7 days, # hatched
my last few hatches look like this...

#/type set # fertile # hatched hatch rate
15 sfh 10 8
80%
24 sfh 10 7 70%
14 sfh 8 5 62.5%
45 sfh 25 18 72%
19 assorted* 8 5 62.5%
my own assorted eggs included blrw, bantam cochin (turns out ee mix/cochins) and Dorkings... most eggs were clear, I think because of the cold...
the last bunch of 40+ eggs ALL were clear.
the sfh travel a bit over 2 hours to get to me, hatching them for a friend.

I hatched from 7 Breese 6 chicks. I still have 2 pair at point of lay so NO that is not normal. I got mine from madamwlf and had a great hatch. Maybe the best I have had from shipped eggs. I am going to get mine separated soon.

Some eggs just don't travel well..... sometimes it comes from the way they are packed. I find eggs fair better when shipped upright.... like you hatch them. The air cells are better that way. I also think the time of year it is, fertility is spotty..... and the cold may have had some impact during shipping.

I am going to be in serious trouble with eggs. I sold 4-5 doz to one person yesterday and 1 doz to someone else and still i had 120 eggs to get

I must sell some hens ASAP! AND THEY ARE NOT ALL LAYING YET

anticipated is ordered/ received is arrived in tact - day 10 candle for viability. of the culls 80% clear 10% blood rings 10% early quitters.

i dont look for fertility in clears anymore as most have bullseye - i boil them and feed them

Thanks for the info. I just assumed it was normal for some not to be fertile (clear). My shipped eggs are close to the same rates as my own, so far. I feel fortunate that they are growing at all. Technically these should be my test hatch but I made a rash buy right before I set them... lol

I'm looking forward to the next hatch because I will be more prepared and informed...

After rereading I think I'm understanding a little better. So if the egg is clear it could be unfertile or just mishandled during shipping. And in your rate you calculate the developing eggs that actually hatch... Hopefully I am on the right track. Just hoping for a good hatch
