Thanks guys, the hardest part for me is having to make the life or death decision. Suffering is not an option. I would like to hear what everyone's preferred method for putting their chicks down. I drown the little guy, but this method didn't seem like the quickest way. I'm sorry you lost your buck, oz
thanks carrie - it was quick. i just hope all 4 does are pregnant.

i just lost my very costly nubian buck.
a bycer quoted his grandfather - where there is livestock, there is deadstock.

culling is part of hatching but sorry you had to go through it

Oh gosh im sorry that sucks. If only could tell you what is up.

After reading a uc davis artical on how to dispach I break the neck right at the top wgere it attaches to the brain renders them unconscious and kills fast.

I put them in a ziplock and stick in the deep freeze. They just kind of drift off to sleep. This was recommended to me by a guy at the USDA in California. It was years ago and I think he said they usually euthanize with liquid nitrogen?

day old chicks I use the freezer... they have so little body mass that they just get cold, sleep and freeze. I think it's more humane than drowning or disassembling them.

Thank you, I think the freezer method will be my next choice, if I need to euthanize again (and I'm sure I will) scissors are probably the quickest way, but a little to graphic for me!

It maybe a girl thing but I just can't HURT them. Kind and easy works for me. I had a chicken friend that was a special services soldier and he was out somewhere and nearly froze to death and he said if he could pick a way to day.... that was it. Just go to sleep and die.

X2. I had to cull one sickly chick last summer that was suffering while my hubby was at work. He always just breaks their necks really quickly and it's over. I'll never do it again. Especially when I'm already attached. For some reason though its different when they are older and going to the stew pot. I hold, he cuts. Over. Don't know...babies are different for me. :/
