Incubators Anonymous

Quote: They are the ones with 2 windows and it broke on the piece between the windows and were the cord comes through the top. She has a still air that looks just like it so maybe I will just swap the fan out. She is willing come over and make a new bator if we need to.

how does tilting a still air incubator 45 degrees work out for you? where to you measure temps. one would think the temp gradient between the high and low point would be enough to cook the eggs.
Exactly. I set some shipped eggs with horrible air cells last month. They were still rolling so much at day six I left them in the cartons and tried the books-under-the-bator thing. I had nearly a four degree gradient between the high side and the low side. And with the thermostat in the middle, the bator kept getting hotter and hotter on the high side because it never detected that high temp. Defiantly cost me some eggs :(

I just had my first 100% hatch

Whoooooot!!!

Quote: karen, love that idea of a second bottom to swap out during cleaning.

NOOOOOOOO!!!! I think the motor is going out in my auto turner! I keep hearing a clicking sound from it about every 20-30 seconds!!! I do not want to hand turn!!! :(

So, I was planning on setting eggs today. Fired up the genesis on Friday. Put 2 thermometers in there to check the thermostat accuracy (the one ON the unit was right on last year). Now I'm having a problem. The readout on the unit, which I know are notorious for being wrong, says 99.5. One thermometer says 94.3, and the OTHER is reading at around 96. So I have no idea which one to trust and no other thermometers to put in there. What should I do NOW? I have other chicks from the feed store so I'm really wanting to set these eggs today so I can combine them a week or so after hatch instead of having to build pens.

Get a glass add ice and water put a thermometer in. It should read 32 degrees F. If the thermometer is reading otherwise that is your offset on the reading in the incubator

I have 18 eggs "cooking" right now. At 10 days 2 of the eggs have lost a little too much moisture the others are right on track for a 14% weight/moisture loss. How do I decrease the moisture loss in the two without affecting the others, or do I not worry about?

Thanks!

Honestly, I cant help you, hopefully someone else can. I dont weigh, or anything "special" with my eggs. I just incubate and keep an eye on incubation and hatch. I dont mark where the air cell is either. Surprisingly I will usually have a pretty good hatch rate anyway. But sometimes ill have very bad hatch rates. I notice is when I buy eggs from someone ill have bad hatch rates at times.
