What I have been doing is putting a piece of chicken wire just over the nest box the broody decides to choose and that's where she gets to stay. I let them out in the evening when I get home from work anytime before that (tried on the weekends) they refuse to come out. When I let them out they are only out for about 10 mins, if that, so I usually just do what chores I can and come back....sometimes they pick the wrong nest again but if you come back after a few minutes, its easy enough to put them on the right one. So its working rather well actually!
glad I saw this post today! My broody did not want to move to her own apartment in the corner of the barn.

I woke up to pips in my red dorking eggs this morning! Also, the last call duck egg is zipping 2 days later than the rest! That will bring me up to 10 call ducks for the week and I'm hoping for a decent hatch on the Dorkings even though I kinda messed up on the incubation by miscalculating the hatch day. I put them in lockdown too early and then was afraid to move them back out because of the ducks hatching in the same hatcher. Hope I didn't mess them up too much!

Give it a good twelve hours..the ones you have to watch are the ones with no external marans ten too get too big or the shells are to hard to make and external and they die from no air..I had a dorking take over 24 before it decided to hatch then came about 90% out and took a nap shell dried to the little guy who was scooting around stuck to the egg just yesterday.. strongest chick now..some just need more time in the shell.

We are at like hour 18, he's still moving and cheeping, but no more even crack. His little hole is just big enough he can get his nose through.

I am just gonna head out, and hope for the best.

Kinda in shock that no one else has started yet, and they all seemed much more ready that the first two.

A batch of shipped eggs due to hatch today. There's not even a pip.

Got a whole bunch a lazies in my incubator. I am pretty sure they should have started on Wednesday. One hatched yesterday, one externally pipped about 10 am yesterday, and is still chillin' with "his" nose out of the pip, cheeping away, and dancing. I have several other eggies rocking, but,...?

My lil Flutter is all alone in the brooding box, but she did come eat for me this morning, and drank some water from my hand.

Question, is it true that if I handle them too much at this age that I could kill them?

Excitement is running high here in redlands world... My "expensive" eggs go into lockdown this weekend... After candling (finally) i pulled out 5 clears, from 15 eggs so i have 10 developing.. Now all they need to do is get themselves out of the shells :)

fingers crossed!!!

if you can't see try to hear make sure it is very quite quickly snatch an egg an listen...they may just be pokey..
