Incubators Anonymous

I don't see that putting it in the box will hurt the air flow, I don't see any ventilation on the sides or top. I have never seen that bator before so not sure I will be any help. I don't think I would close the top just put it in the box. A ice cooler would hold the heat better. Is it just plastic with no insulation? I would think it would be hard to keep the temps in that without running all the time.

I was going by the reading on your bator it said 41.5.

ok yeah ignore that reading that was earlier when I was unsure of right temp but got sorted now. The problem is that I need to put something over it to keep the temp up. Yes it is all plastic only. You get what you pay for. I don't mind keeping it in the box as long as it will allow enough airflow. I would really only need to close it up at night.

Also would it be fine in the loungeroom with a heater? I have read that some people keep it in a room with heating and other people say not to. I have found that it didn't fluctuate as long as I can keep it insulated at night when it gets coldest.

I would be concerned about no ventilation.... you might want to consider something.... drilling some holes or cracking the top. They need air. I would find a place were it would be the most stable. Don't worry about what other say, do what works at your place.

What about this?

There is air that gets in here, is this enough? I am not going to drill holes in case I do something wrong as Im not a handiperson. This is my first and once I have a brooder made I will buy a bigger one that holds more eggs but until then this is it for me

The cheapest Brinsea with auto turn holds 7 eggs and costs over $150.

That's what we've found too and Hova-bator is in that ballpark.

The point in keeping your incubator in a particular room (w/ or w/o heat or anything else) is a Mayer of keeping the ambient temperature as steady as possible. Inn don't ppl's houses that's a heated room in other ppl's houses, that's an unheated room.
It sounds like you're concerned with the incubator starting a fire, being coveted at night. Put a smoke detector near it, a little higher than where the box is (smoke rises).

I'm looking for a good incubator with automatic turning that will hatch about a dozen or so eggs but not cost an arm and a leg.
Please help me hatch-aholics!

I have had the ReptiPro recommended to me by a BYC member who had a 5000 and love it. That one can go higher than just one dozen. The 6000 has been out a year now and had mixed reveiws at first. Mostly problems with the window fogging from a poor seal. The more recent reviews have not been as critical. I think they must have got the problem fixed.

There is also a lovely looking Janoel on ebay with a turner for around $215. The company is British and manufactures in China. They have a good reputation in general but I have yet not looked up the specific reviews on this model.

S any advice as to where and how to drill holes? Will I then be able to tape them up to keep air out if need be and were would be best?

Quote: Not sure.... heat rises..... maybe one at the top and one at the bottom on opposite sides. You can use black electric tape to cover them if needed. WAIT to drill holes till someone else comes along about placement, I am not sure. My bator is not like that.

You need to figure out a way to keep the heat in and get some ventilation. with that bator you might have a hard time keeping temp with ventilation since there is no insulation.

Those will not be like the commercial cornishX.

No but that is what they started with. That is the original CornishX. The commercial cross has it's problems. You have to ask yourself if a less high maintenece chicken is worth the 2 or 3 more weeks that it takes to make the weight you want. There is some good research that says that the ones that don't shoot up so fast have time to develop better flavor an nutrient value. (Check Ark of Taste and Slow Food sites.)
