Incubators Anonymous

Nice!! I'd like to know how you like it and how it does. I've considered getting one of the janoels. Might get one of the little ones for my kids to try their hand at hatching. They're very interested in it and who am I to not encourage their interests?

I am maybe gonna buy the 48 egg later cause I wanna hatch 2 batches at a time, but I cant with the 92 egg because I cant raise the humidity while the other batch isnt even hatching!! So I am gonna use the 48 egg as a hatcher and the 92 egg as a setter, so then I will have 1 batch hatching every week!!

YES! Just can't help myself. It's just amazing that the plain ol' eggs that I put in the bator have a living creature inside after 3 weeks. I love it and am absolutely fascinated by it

I read about that too but I don't have a fan so I can't offer personal experience. Sorry. July??? Now that's some impressive self control

No self control here. I kept looking at that empty incubator calling out to me. Storing it in the garage didn't help b/c I keep the chicken supplies there & saw it daily. I had to have DH put it up in the attic.

That's why I ended up with 2 LG's within a week of each other. Since I get them shipped and there's no way to synchronize their delivery dates, it just made sense to have a hatcher too. Otherwise I could only fit in one batch at a time and how sad would that be? And all the lovely variety I would miss out on! It's hard to find bantam barnyard mixes. Now my third incubator will be for all overflow eggs from generous sellers who send extras. And, um, you know... if I find a few more great deals while my first bator is full! And I just discovered that it can hold 71 large eggs or 89 small-medium eggs! I didn't realize it had that kind of capacity when I bought it.

I'd have to have mine under lock and key! And with absolutely no access to the key! Or bolt cutters for that matter...

Right there with ya on the nail biting! 2 eggs hatched, 11 to go! Good luck!!

That's just awesome. I may have to mention a hatching project to my kids teachers....

Yeah, today was hatch day, but nothing's going on yet. =( I'm really beginning to bite my nails. I'm debating about candling one...or one from each bator....Oh, who am I kidding? I'll probably end up candling all of them, gotta keep it all even, right?

Use a diaper. Completely soak it in warm water and set it inside. That's what I did. I couldn't get it to sit above 55% before. Now it's at 70-72%. Or if you happen to have sanitary napkins in your house... those work too. I also have the ummm piece of crap LOL

disposable or cloth?

Sigh... another temp spike last night. I don't think I will be keeping my LG's very long.

It holds temp and everything just fine when I'm awake. It waits to misbehave when I'm asleep. I keep my room at a fairly constant temp so I don't get it. I candled all my silkie eggs. All dead. 2 RIR chicks that I hatched for my grandmother made it. I candled the last 2 eggs and honestly wasn't sure if they were dead or not so I put them back in for another day or two. They looked like they possibly had survived.

I've actually used both and they both work. The first time was a disposable. Worked like a charm! Now I use the cloth.

Yes one must keep things even

I hope you have a better turnout than me!!!

Is there a space left on the side in the bator after the turner is in there? Like in this picture. I put eggs there when I run out of room. I just have to remember to turn them.
Brilliant! I can put the little silkie eggs there! Iill make little cups for them from the bottom of an egg carton! That will free me up five spaces for tomorrows collection! By tuesday I should have a free incubator!

I iterate, one does not have these problems with a well versed and established setting hen. They are most dependable. Silkies come first. They will hatch a dozen of their own, 8 large eggs and 8-10 medium sized eggs. (The trick is to put as many of your desired hatching eggs under the broody that she can cover without any hanging out in the chilly breeze.) Then they set about rearing the offspring. No artificial brooder required! So get a line of experienced hens that you have set a couple of times and whose record you have noted and go from there. And don't make the mistake of trying to plug one into the juice receptacle! I know about a fellow who tried that once eons ago; and the result, the development of Kentucky Fried Chicken! Well, at least that is the way I heared it. Any of you who are old enough to remember a character on the Fibber McGee and Molly radio show (1930s and 40s) will remember one Bill Thompson as The Old Timer who's catch phrase was, "Ain't the way I heared it!"
Stay well and get yourselves some proven setting hens!
Sincerely,
Neal, the Zooman

Holy smokes! That's bad! I have 4 thermometers bc I'm afraid of them being off lol

Yeah, I use at least two thermometers when I use only one incubator, so I know where the hot and cold spots are.

Hi! I'm not sure if I'm an incubator "addict" or not, although I do have 9 (blue, black, splash) Marans in the brooder, 1 Cream Legbar & 1 Light Brahma in another brooder, 12+ Lemon Blue Cochin eggs & 12+ Blue Partridge Brahma eggs in the 'bator right now. Oh & I also have 12+ Jubilee Orpington eggs coming this week.

Sounds like you'll fit right in here!!!

I'd like some Legbars for me and some Lemon Blue Cochins for DD (are they bantam or LF?)
