Has anyone ever used a older scientific incubator for hatching chicks? I have a chance to get one that they used for collecting horse....!  Well I won't finish that but I think you get the picture! Would love some input please! Thank you!

What do you mean by older? I've got a Lyon roll x2 that someone before me used for a long time. The thing works great but it looks like it came out of a mad scientists lab

I don't know how old.I will be talking to her later to find out more info. Only know she said it keeps good temp. takes a a bit to adjust before you use it.I read somewhere that not enough oxygen to hatch chicks in ? She said she would send pictures later also.

Yes, you'll just need to manually turn the eggs.

Yes, apparently it will. I saw pictures of one recently where someone had put tuners like you use in a styrofoam incubator in the hatching egg trays of a cabinet incubator and they said the eggs hatch fine.

O.k step two figure out how I can build more pens without involving my husband!

Craigslist! You do not need to build them. Just find someone selling a doghouse, playhouse, etc.& also an old dog run. I was able to get both for free!

Is step 3 figuring out how to keep him from noticing the new pen? If so I'm progressing nicely! gig

Step 3 is tough. My DH is mainly an inside person, but he has to walk through our backyard at some point. LOL

Since I started selling eggs & hatching chicks, my DH is also a "hatching enabler and a chicken limiter."

I thought about a dog run but am worried a mink would get through and kill the chickens. I saw one about 4 monthes ago! I would have to cover the pen in hardware cloth.

There is not enough oxygen in any sealed box to hatch chicks in-----you have to vent the box/incubators and you would have to properly vent this too!!
