Incubators Anonymous

You set them noon local time on the 11th if they are chickens, you fill out a form and try to guess closest to how many eggs will be set overall, things like that.

-Number of eggs set
-Number of chicks hatched
-Week 1 Contest (TBD)
-Week 2 Contest (TBD)
-Week 3 Contest (TBD)
-Best overall participant - (gets to choose between a 6 month GFM & a Calendar.)

So we get to welcome the new year with some new chicks!

YEah !!! So glad I didn't toss the 3 eggs after the broody hen hatched 10 chicks and deserted the nest. Today one of the 3 pipped and needed the top removed then it finished the job of hatching. I will give the last 2 a little more time.

DH doesn't want more chickens but he loves the chicks.

broodies. gotta love em huh.... found my awol broody today (followed her after she ate lunch) and found her nest, not too far from anything. here i'd been searching high and low but not close.

she was entirely soaked from our freezing rain/sleet/snow crap coming down (don't talk to me about global warming

) so i hurried and fixed a broody tub for her with egg crate nest. i'll give her water/food later once she settles in, don't want her dumping it on the eggs yet. gathered 15 eggs (no wonder they were sticking out the sides!) brought them in and went back to get her, soaked and shivering. she didn't complain once the whole while i was gathering eggs and then scooping her up.
tho i don't really think i had to worry about predators, she'd nested in some thorny vine under some blackberries... needless to say my rescue left me scarred

she's got 9 of the eggs, the rest are in the hatcher, since everyones hatched now, and has settled down i think. i peeked in and she was sitting quietly on the eggs, but i do hear her moving about now and then. there's a dark towel over her tub to simulate night time for her for now... after i'm sure she's going to stay broody then i'll take the towel part way off so she can have a day/night.

Glad you were able to locate her and get her to a better location. Sorry about the scars. Seems thats par for the course--I have far more scars from chickens in less than a year than from all my 20 years with other farm yard animals. My broken bones didn't leave scars.

Any idea of a hatch date??? My date was a week off!!! I feel so guilty that my BO was missing for a week before I noticed! Must have been due to my boys putting the birds in for the night rather than me--I count the BO they don't. LOL THey are looking for their favs, not mine.! Hopefully you have a better clue than I did about a hatch date.

nope no clue... but i candled the eggs and didn't see much. they might be 4 days along? also no idea how long the eggs were all out there. i've got 8 hens, 2 were broody, so that leaves 6, and one is laying in the horse trailer, so that brings it down to 5... who may or may not lay every other day... there were 15 eggs in the bunch.

i think she likes her new home. moved while it was still light, soon as i gave her food/water she was off the eggs to eat, but pooped on them ALL... so... they got washed and are back in with her. hopefully she'll figure out the potty solution. i don't mind pooper scooping but i'd rather not have to wash the eggs every time LOL.

Day 18, going into lockdown and added water to raise the humidity - already hearing peeps!!! I was expecting Halloween chicks, maybe they'll come a day or two early? These are BR's hatching from my own flock - my first hatch! I'm so excited! Shut the door to the room the incubator's in so the cats don't try to figure out what's making the peeping noise, but I have a feeling I'll be in there a lot the next couple days.

You guys... I just did something very bad. I bid on an auction and won. Oops.

I'm going to need everyone's support and some more excuses for hubby.
