Ok I am new to this whole chick thing, when and how do you do a timer for the chicks lights? I have nearly 6 week olds and I want to break them of the heat lamp BEFORE I toss them out side in this cooler weather. I do have a florescent light with a timer to get them used to day time light. But when do you give them heat and take it away completely.
oh i don't have the heat on a timer, just the light (cfl bulb). the heat is a ceramic heat emitter sold for reptiles. i have a 40w, 60w, and 100w emitters, they screw in like light bulbs, and just produce heat only. that way i can wean the babies onto a normal day/night cycle. but i like to leave light the first week or so since they seem to need to eat/drink more often.
but since i had 2 hatches, a week apart, the light's still on... youngest guys hatched today. oldest a week ago yesterday. sold 9 chicks from both hatches today. the guy's 2 kids were beside themselves, couldn't wait to get them home.
for me, i'm thinking it'll buy a couple bags of feed.
hubby's smiling because those 9 chicks just paid for 2 months of feed.
(gotta love free range birds... they practically feed themselves. oh. wait. they do!
