I was talking to DH about the Easter Hatch. We had made the big effort of segregating the marans hens for someone who wanted pure marans for the Easter Hatch. However, she has changed her mind but how can I let these eggs now become breakfast? I though , heck, I'll do the Easter Hatch. DH is nixing it! Drat him!

I was talking to DH about the Easter Hatch. We had made the big effort of segregating the marans hens for someone who wanted pure marans for the Easter Hatch. However, she has changed her mind but how can I let these eggs now become breakfast? I though , heck, I'll do the Easter Hatch. DH is nixing it! Drat him!

LOL i'm sure you can find SOMEBODY to hatch them for you. 8) heck send em on down. i've got space now. just no money for em.

i ended up adding another hovabator, that came in slightly damaged, i called the co i got it from, they just sent me another one said use the dinged one for parts. LOL it's missing a small chunk of styrofoam from one corner, and the lid on the opposite corner has a similar ding. still seals and heats just fine tho. so now i've got 4 hovabators. 3 to incubate in, 1 to hatch in... that's 42 eggs a week i can do!

and parts to make a homebrew one too. gonna see if i can get a buddy into electronics to reverse engineer the 'incu-kit' and see about making another/more, with larger heat supply. these just use 10w resistors for the heat source. (4 of em)

Wow awesome if I ordered any more incubators I would so get in trouble I have the LG and the Hovabator and my husband is already eyeing me funny but he doesn't mind having the good tasting chicken and eggs as an end product so I think he will be okay with it. Can't wait until I get the SG Dorking eggs I am super excited to add them to my coop. How is your rooster doing is he paying attention to the ladies yet?

well, ONE of the girls is fertile... but not both right now. the other girls are all getting evicted soon. working on the horse trailer tomorrow, should have it done ASAP. maybe even tomorrow. not like it's horribly complicated. add perches, close in the end, run fence. and the fence is only temporary, until they learn where home is (a week or so). then it'll be straight free range again.

i'll give you a holler for sure when i'm getting 100% fertile, and the other orders are filled. 8)

Cool I can't wait!!

My roosters are just as bad they pick one or two girls and will breed with those and totally ignore the others even though they have 13 girls in the coop. So frustrating.

Secretly, I'm hoping the woman will change her mind again as the set date arrives. She is within driving distance if she really wants them. Otherwise I have only 5 marans hens, and that's not nearly enough to add choc eggs to the carton. Adding a few blue EE and marans eggs sure makes the carton pretty.

You have been shipping a lot of eggs. How much is the shipping charges adding up to to ship a doz eggs? I was looking at the packaging at the PO the other day. In hopes of shipping a few at some point, hopefully sooner rather than later.

actually i buy more than i ship. but the flat rate box at PO is $15 and that's what I usually go with. that's what i usually receive too.

you can do that too if you want, but the flat rate boxes, you can cram as much as you want in there and it's the same price regardless. the $15 box is usually good for a dozen eggs with packing, and it's $15 shipped anywhere in the country.

there are other/smaller boxes too, if you were only shipping, say 6 eggs, but IMO the bigger boxes are handled better.

just got 31 red and red/colored Dorking eggs on wed, and they were in great shape. the last 6 eggs i got, 4 were scrambled pretty bad. the other 2 are in the hatcher now. (mottled cochin i think)
(edit - i forget not everyone understands the only LF breed is Dorking LOL at least in my world.)
