Incubators Anonymous

Quote: There was an experiment I read about, basically the results showed hatched chicks need the most oxygen, the externally pipped eggs a little less, and the internally pipped eggs the least. BUT they all need oxygen, just increasing amounts. ANd a fan can increase the air flow to provide enough oxygen and dry the chicks.

I expect a very large commercial incubator to have fan system. Does it?

I do in a way think it needs one... One chick that was having a hard time was on the bottom and when I picked him up to help he was cold to me. I put him on top and near the light to warm up. Maybe the answer is a false box to circulate the air but not directly blowing on the eggs, chicks. My hatcher is not build to NOT blow on the eggs. I will give it a look this week. I have 4 days to figure something out.

I sold all my extra Marans I hatched yesterday AND several people wanted my FREE little roos... If I can get rid of them as little guys, I am flying

I attended a chicken nutrition seminar last night!!! Gotta feed those egg laying ladies just right.ALl very interesting stuff.

Hi my name is Kym, I am new on BYC ....... I too have incubationitis and currently have 3 incubators full of eggs and more waiting to be put in as soon as incubators are vacant again. It truly is addictive and my husband thinks it is a illness with no cure available.

As you have figured out by now, your in the right place!! We'll help you. Help you hatch more chicks , that is!!!

Boy, did I find the right thread!

Hi, I have IOD (Incubating Obsessive Disorder) as well. I have 4 LG's with three running right now, one is the hatcher. I also have 2 8x3 brooders full of chicks
big_smile.png
a small brooder for the newborns first 24 hours with 4 in that right now, some more fowl on order (geese and chickens) ....ummmm....
I can only open up so much on my first visit....will have to get more therapy before I indulge everyone on ALL the facts

Yup, we all have IOD!

lol i've been taking all my roos to the local poultry swaps, and sold all of them for $5 each. starting to wonder if i should ask more and be willing to go down LOL

Quote: I can sell them, but I have to grow them up. Some of these roos were day olds. Some were less than a month and 2 were 8-10 weeks. If I can get them gone at hatch that is great! Someone wanted 2 BCM roos when I have some extras.... those cost. I have someone that will buy my culls to eat. I am have to grow up some breeder roos always... so any I can get rid of soon gives me more room to grow them up. I will take what I can get for roos...

Someone wants them to eat bugs in their yard and he will take all I have.... LOL

I probably should not show him any of these post cause he won't sleep fearing I will make him build me the ultimate incubator that holds 100' of eggs. This thread has actually been kind of theraputic for me, all of my friends and family think I am nuts ( the crazy chicken lady ) so here I feel normal

I just need to say 'I hear ya!' to this! Everyone calls me 'that crazy chicken lady'. You all make me feel at home. Thank you.

shuffling... yup know all about that too. just shuffled 3 colored dorkings into the silver grey pen, so i'd have some place to stick the 7 ee chicks that have outgrown the brooder, so i can make room for the... 20 + 26 + 16... 62 eggs getting ready for lockdown over th e next week. (sorry, i know how many per incubator, but can't seem to remember the 'big number' lol maybe that's a trick for my brain to keep it's sanity?

Lol.... I have too many birds right now! We are constantly "shuffling" them here or there! Guess some will have to be sold....
