Incubators Anonymous

I was reviewing CL to see what was out there for chick ads in prep for posting an ad myself and I saw an ad for a huge incubator for $350 in my town!!! I was good-I didn't open the listing . . . . but I'm feeling regrets!

so you won't feel so bad having missed that one, anytime you have regrets just let me know and I will build a huge one for you...

My City has a $100.00 rebate on he purchase of a composter. I am thinking about getting a barrel composter from Costco. I do have garden spaces on my lot. I have fences to keep the chickens out. They still managed to get into them. They love to eat bean plants. Won't eat tomato plants but are crazy for tomatoes.

I have two Genesis 1588 incubators. I use one for a hatcher and on for an incubator. I have added three chicken hutches and two pens. I am working on fencing off the side yard for the layer flock. The two pens under the kitchen window will each house my breeding pens for the Basque and the Cream legbars. I will try the Cream Legbars to see how the are, but may switch to SQ Partridge Rocks or Heritage RIR's. I could start working on SG Dorkings, but someone recently said they needed 20 years to perfect theirs. One of theirs won a blue ribbon last summer at a poultry show. I suppose I could make it my life's work, but who would keep them going after I am gone? I am impressed that there is a group working on them and I am helping a local breeder with her SG Dorkings.

Of course Roosters are not allowed here so I will have to hide them in the Garage over night

. I do see them running around town though(literally running around town--by the RR tracks by the Fair Grounds). I think Hens have been allowed here for so long folks don't pay attention to the Roosters.
I used to hate the idea of roosters. Stems from a visit to an aunt during my college years, when I was so exhausted that I only wanted to sleep late. And her rooster had the gall to crow and disturb my sleep. My life has changed dramatically, I now have a rooster in the house on R&R to heal his leg, and he will crow at 4 am and it resonates thru the house!

Outside, I hardly notice the crowing.

I know the feeling. My husband is just now starting to build incubators so I will have lots of room for more eggs but what will I do with all these chicks. LOL
Definitely solve the "what will I do with all these chicks" problem so you can hatch more if you want to .... oops . . . when you want to.

THe LG keeps me in more than enough chickens!! I do have a hatcher which I may need to press into service again as the turkey hens are now laying !!!

i have 50 eggs going right now. 25 are in my Leahy bator and 25 are in my bigger bator. I really need to see what model it is. Dh got it for me from some friends of ours that was selling it. I want to say 1522 but not sure why that number pop up in my head. The Leahy Incubator dh found at a trade days from a gentleman that was selling it. Has Original books, ordering sheets, Everything on the incubator is original except for the cord he replaced it sense it was one of those paper ones and for safety.
This is my second year using it.

I have Australorps, EE's, Buffs, Lavenders and really hoping those will hatch sense I only have 2 hens left from that group.
I may have to order more eggs or chicks from the lady this group came from. They are pure bred so are my buffs.
I have a momma silkie sitting on about 16 eggs. Have hers marked so she can't try and hide other eggs she might want to take.

62 at last count... I don't know how many are under the broodiest but I am thinking 8. Chicks hatched under both broodiest. I was shocked to see them hatching under the marans. Hope they are good mommies.

They don't tell you a Hova-Bator 1620 will hold 71 eggs

I'm here today to confess that I am out of control and definitely in trouble. Chookschick posted that she has chocolate and lemon barred orpington eggs for sale . . . so I feel the desire to track down contact information. And today I will buy TJ white fertile eggs if the store carries these eggs. I will be in the same city today so I don't need to make two trips--good thing DS1 has his soccer game in Worcester!

I must be a true addict--no guilt , just want, want want . . . more chickens.

Arielle, you are scaring me. I was thinking about the Trader Joes eggs today too. My plan is to call the Dairy Dept and find out when they get them in and ask them to hold a couple of dozen for me. I have been thinking about doing this since I read the whole TJ thread in December. Now I may give in since I read you are doing this today....

I bet those chicks will go fast on CL.

Quote: I would like a few white egg layers. The trick is to not take from the front of the display case but to reach to the back for the freshest eggs. I will have to bring a calculator, or just find the carton with the largest number on it !

are you saying that you can hatch out eggs that you get from the dairy section of your say wal mart, or grocery store?
I need to find the link from TJ that talks about this.
