I was reviewing CL to see what was out there for chick ads in prep for posting an ad myself and I saw an ad for a huge incubator for $350 in my town!!! I was good-I didn't open the listing . . . . but I'm feeling regrets!

The neighbor I was getting SLW eggs from lost his roo to a fox so I set all 3 doz he had and told him to keep collecting till the 1st and I would set all he gets. So I set 35 eggs for him. 25+ Lav Split Ams, some Leghorns, NH, Olive Eggers, Blue Rocks any way there as about 130 eggs I think. I brought home 12 doz eggs, I was going to set but decided not to. I made the chicks LOTS of scrambled eggs and still have enough for me and the neighbors.

CHICKS were already hatching today, a day early! I had another Lavender and 6 EE and 2 NH out and drying off when I left. Several had pipped. None of the SLW pipped still hoping

The 2 broodies are due now too, One girl is sticking very tight to her nest, I never see her up, but I see evedence she has been

The other one I don't think I will get any chicks from her. She is up all the time, the eggs were cold. I don't know if I should trust her next time or not. The blue rock, can brood anytime!. I may give her some more babies. I would rather she raise them than me.

A couple of weeks ago there was an add in the local CL fro a Sportsman incubator and hatcher, both of them for $800.00. Those things are huge! I was tempted for a minute

I am looking forward to eating the Dorking Rooster I have from McMurray. I also have two Red Star packing roosters and three Partridge Rock Roosters. I will also have extra Marans and Basque Roosters. My DD wants the feathers too. She wants to make earrings. I will be selling extras. It's just hard juggling so many groups of chickens at my place in town. My City is not known for having large lots.

and of the poo I have to shovel...

Donna, nice of you to set all those SLW seeing as you have enough room in that enormous incubator. The SLW are very pretty.

They are pretty. He just has hatchery birds, but still pretty and good layers. They are not very fertile..... out of 5 doz last time I put only 12 in the hatcher. He really only needs a roo. I think I can help him with that. I think he needs to replace his whole flock they are about 3 years old so he is going to have a slowdown in eggs pretty soon.

Glad you were good and resisted.... that big incubator will get you in trouble QUICK! Mine was empty for all of one day!

Ron --now you need a garden to make use of all that poo!!! Even plants in a container need extra fertilizer!

THe LG can hatch more chicks than I need, fits 40+ eggs and the current rooster population has a way of causing me to rethink how many eggs I set . . . . until I look at the eggs!

Working on sales. posted on CL late at night. Checked for msgs at noon. First person had wanted to come that morning. Second person lived next town but didn't read these were chicks, wanted POL for $4 each

, 3rd person wrote in broken English and didn't read my location information and wanted me to bring them for free to a location 1 hour away.

My City has a $100.00 rebate on he purchase of a composter. I am thinking about getting a barrel composter from Costco. I do have garden spaces on my lot. I have fences to keep the chickens out. They still managed to get into them. They love to eat bean plants. Won't eat tomato plants but are crazy for tomatoes.

I have two Genesis 1588 incubators. I use one for a hatcher and on for an incubator. I have added three chicken hutches and two pens. I am working on fencing off the side yard for the layer flock. The two pens under the kitchen window will each house my breeding pens for the Basque and the Cream legbars. I will try the Cream Legbars to see how the are, but may switch to SQ Partridge Rocks or Heritage RIR's. I could start working on SG Dorkings, but someone recently said they needed 20 years to perfect theirs. One of theirs won a blue ribbon last summer at a poultry show. I suppose I could make it my life's work, but who would keep them going after I am gone? I am impressed that there is a group working on them and I am helping a local breeder with her SG Dorkings.

Of course Roosters are not allowed here so I will have to hide them in the Garage over night

. I do see them running around town though(literally running around town--by the RR tracks by the Fair Grounds). I think Hens have been allowed here for so long folks don't pay attention to the Roosters.
