Well, good news and okay news. I finished selling my extra chicks from the Easter hatch yesterday. Luckily, there were local poultry sales both last Saturday and this Saturday, and I was able to sell my last 5 chicks yesterday morning in the first 45 minutes and go home early. I had tried Craigslist first, assuming non-hatchery chicks would go fast, but I only had a few responses and they were too particular. I definitely prefer face-to-face poultry sales. So that was good.
The older couple who was going to bring me the OEGB eggs I didn't really want, duck eggs that I did, and purple eggs I planned to send on to a BYCer didn't remember and felt really bad about it. I was relieved not to have to set the 70-whatever game bird eggs, but I feel bad about the purple eggs. They promised they would bring me some next time now, so we'll see. Okay.
I had 15 German New Hampshire eggs in the incubator. I candled on day 7 and didn't like what I saw - 2 blood rings, 1 clear, and most of the rest had this low-hanging dark mass I call a "hammock" shape that usually does not do well, but I felt like I couldn't see really well. I thought it was odd because the eggs are just light brown, but I didn't think much of it and decided to not pull anything until later when things were more definitive. Then, my husband was using my flashlight for something outside. Afterwards he told me it probably just needed new batteries....
Yuuup. So, I changed out the batteries and candled last night. 2 blood rings, 1 clear, 2 "hammock"-blob quitters, and 10 doing great! I saw all 10 move, and I was so relieved! I had convinced myself that the crazy temps we have had recently had done them all in, but 10 developers on day 12 is okay with me. One more week. (((
