Yeah that makes sense. I don't plan on breeding anytime soon so that's a non issue with me.

What kind of pen? I tried permanent marker last year... not great. I used food coloring on layer's vent to discriminate which hen each egg came from. That might be messy on chick backs! Anything I put on a leg they outgrow so fast... I'm always checking, it seems. I just bought Livestock markers (looks like chalk) at TS. I haven't tried it yet. Something should work, easy to put on, lasts a couple of months, can't hurt them. So.... what kind of pen?OK, I mark ALL my eggs by pen and I use dividers at hatch AND I tag them all with vet wrap..... and hope it does not come off. I find some COLORS of Vet wrap don't work very well, anybody else?
My first bunch of eggs is due to hatch tomorrow, I hear peeping and scratching!! That's just so cool![]()
Quote: Sorry the PEN was the Pen the birds are in. I mark the eggs with pencil. The marans eggs I mark with an artist pencil that is white. The vet wrap can stay on for a long time.... months. After they get to be about 3 months, I use velcro and use pipe cleaners for the color markers. I can't put up a pic right now, if I can remember I will later.
