Incubators Anonymous

I'm always saying that incubating gives me a bit of a God complex since all I do is add a bit of heat and moisture to an egg that if I had chosen to eat instead would have seemed empty of life.

Today is day 14 for the eggs in my bator and I candled them. Something happened today for the first time in the twelve or so years that I've incubated off and on. When I put an egg to the light, two little TINY feet pushed up against the shell. So perfectly formed already!!! It was no less than AWSOME!!! I didn't even realize they would have such perfectly formed feet already. It's things like that, that cause this to be an addiction!

Careful here! Everyone just enables the addiction!

Rippy: would you please take them eggs for sale off your swap! Those New Hampshires keep calling my name. Enabler!:D

Are you chicks still sneezing? You need to keep them isolated if they are. Chickens don't catch colds.... they have respiratory issues. Some respiratory issues can be transmitted through hatching eggs.
One of my seramas sounded funny this afternoon when I held her but its like never the same bird . One day poof was sneezing then eveyrone was good then one baby had an eye issue then everyone else was good now today the serama sounded like she had something in her nose . I hate the fact that stuff can be spread thru the egg . THat just sucks pardon my french. How long should I isolate them. What should I look for. What do I do if I find out someone actually does have something. ? They are all in 2 brooders the chukar and bobwhites in one and the chicks and the jumbo brown in the other.
Everyone is eating sleeping and pooping like normal as far as I can tell.

God has created wonderful things! Brings me to tears. I hope I will get to see two tiny feet pushed against the shell, for now I am content to have seen a10 day old squirming. THe first for me. SO I understand why you are THRILLED!! WHat a miracle.

a random sneeze or cough here and there is normal, just like people. it could be from dust in the shavings, a bit of water went down the wrong way, or a piece of food gets stuck. it happens. i've also seen chicks do a faceplant in the water and come up gasping for a day or so until the body sorts itself out.

I do have NH, but I usually eat them. No body ever wants to buy them. Now when I get the German NH up and laying (3-4 months), I will sell those and sell my reg NH hens and roo.

I have just had a "hatchaholic binge" Oh, about 100+ guineas just popped out in the last two days like popcorn. I was emptying the hatcher like crazy pulling handfuls of guineas out to put in the transitional bator. Whew... that was fun!
