Incubators Anonymous

i set some muscovy on friday and some mille fleur d'uccle today, so that's it until september. vacation mid september but i figure incubators can cook while we're gone. 8) but i want all the babies to be outside before we leave. the muscovy will be due early august so that'll put them 6 weeks or so when we leave.

as for hatching right now, i've got royal palm turkeys, 2 out 1 more pipped from babymakes6, 2 coturnix (brown) out from maryruthlangdon, and 8 red dorkings from rudy troxel due tomorrow. a couple look slow so i put them back in the incubator (less humidity) until the internally pip then i'll move them back over.

got 1 game fowl egg and 2 mystery eggs due the 5th and i've got some oegb, blue bantam wyandotte, mille/partridge, black & self blue cochins due the 10th.

still no power back on yet. severe t-storm caused even more damage last night. they're still saying saturday. praying it's sooner. the generators are great but it gets expensive feeding them.
Thank goodness you have generators. We don't yet. We want to build a backup generator in our new house so we are not left out in the cold. Probably cheaper than losing all the food and chicks.

are you looking for 'whole home' generator? if you know someone mechanically savvy, go to www.smokstak.com and there are links for where to find used onan generators to suit whatever needs you've got. we're looking at finding a 15-30 kw generator that can work on multi-fuel (natural gas, propane, gasoline). they can be had for a reasonable amount, and sometimes a better one if it needs some repairs.

we've got a 20kw one as backup for the floyd amateur radio society repeater we're building that the county has given us for emergency backup. the club handles emergency communications during natural disasters and other community service related events, and the repeater will be a key part of our local communication abilities.

right now on the house, we're running a 3kw and a 5.5kw pair and splitting up the essentials on them. but for the whole house to run, a 15 would do most of it (not the hot water heater, if the well and a/c are on), and a 30 would be more than adequate, but hubby is thinking any more would be too expensive to feed. a friend nearby said his 25kw generator uses about 10% of the tank per day, but didn't say how large his tank is...

and i wouldn't say it's cheaper for the food end, but with your hatching 'habit' i'd say the chick/egg loss could get up there. LOL

Quote: Thanks! I will bookmark it! Hubby used to do that stuff too..... years ago. I think he still has a couple of old ones upstairs. I don't know if they work still. He is retired from AT&T and used to do restoration for most of North America. Maybe when we ALL retire LOL he can fiddle with them and get them running and play with them. He needs to get them working JUST IN CASE....

He had a rare radio and sold to someone in Finland! Back before internet was really what it is today.

Quote: Hey ladies!

When we built our house we had the electrician run connections for the most vital areas to a generator hook up. Like refrigerator and well pump and a couple outlets and kitchen lights. We also use huge chest freezers. WHen I lift the lid the cold air stays in. THey will hold a long time if kept full.

We only run the vital things, not the whole house. Kids thought it was fun to cook on a propane stove!

Will put more turkey eggs in tonight as I've sold all the poults, except the few I want to keep. ANd I'm trying duck eggs, Muscovey. First try on those. I have no idea what I am doing!

ok i'll ask here... have a customer looking for a specific mixture of chicks. does anyone on this thread have or know where i can get - from the same (reliable) breeder - jersey giant (black i think), blrw and a standard sized mille fleur? not sure what breed mille she's looking for but they like the colors.

I have seen jersey giants in only a few sigantures, and unfortuantly not also a breeder of the others. YOu may need a couple sources.
