just get a hovabator (with fan) and use that for hatching. works great for me...I was the same way at first but now I only candle on day 10 and at lockdown. I usually don't go into lockdown until day 19 if I have other eggs in the bator. I run a sportsman and I think that a day less of high humidity is a little easier on the eggs, especially when a certain set has to go through 3 other hatches before they hatch. I can't wait to get a separate hatcher..or build one.
i don't use the water reservoir in the bottom, but have a plastic bowl with hardware cloth fitted 'lid' to keep chicks from falling in. i fill it about once a week and it keeps the humidity right at 60% (higher when hatching starts).
it's one of those rectangular disposable plastic jobs, maybe 3-4 cup sized. experiment around with different sized bowls and see what size works best for you. i could go smaller probably but just didn't have any smaller ones to try.
