I can't even seem to get rid of any of my bantam mixes. I take it that bantam mixes aren't the thing to hatch around here. They are very beautiful and so lively. I have thoroughly enjoyed them. I can't hatch anymore until I move some out.
Even my bantam mixes go for $3 per chick. Pure breeds go for $4-$15 depending on what they are.

Well I found a buyer for all the male sex link chicks that will hatch, so now just to get these dang pullets to lay then I will be stuffing everything laid into te bator! Only about another month and the dellies should start. My customer wants up to 400 pullets so that means I will get to hatch out around 800 chicks!!! Yay!

I buyer???? That is great!  I just give mine away.... it still helps the bottom line.

I put an ad up at 50 cents each or 40 cents each if taking all of them. They want all of them and are sending a deposit check. Giving them away was my next move if I couldn't find a buyer. I actually had 3 other people call me about them but they were already spoken for.

Cool!!!! Maybe I'll hafta breed sex-links next year. I know I could get at least that or more out of "roaster" chicks

And more good news! One of my cx pullets laid her first egg yesterday so my meatie project is on its way. I am crossing a Delaware over her, but all my del boys are too young so I have a del x hamp roo with her for now. I am just hoping to hatch out a dozen out of each of my 4 cx pullets then work with the offspring. It is exciting to see a project start to come together like this!

Are you breeding actual cornish cross meat birds that you have raised with the delxhamp roo or am I reading this wrong... I thot meaties had a tendency to drop over dead before they ever made it to laying age.

Right now I have 4 cx pullets that are over 4 months old now. They weigh around 12 pounds. I restricted feed since they were about a month old. My del x hamp roo is in there just to check fertility. My delawares boys should be ready next month some time.

I also have 2 cx cockerels that are 15 pounds live. They are for a customer that wants turkey sized chicken. It is funny to hear them crow!

It hatched!!! Not thriving yet but is doing better than when it hatched. Giving sugar water and got a little food into it this morning. He is much happier now that he has a banty chick for company.
He can sit up and move around now. Got to get some poly-vi-sol today.

Quote: the homegrown crosses are just that. crosses. the commercial broilers are from special lines maintained by hatcheries, a hen line and a rooster line, both sustainable themselves, but when crossed produce the super fast growing birds that have no life expectancy beyond 12-16 weeks max.

I am very aware of what they are. And I have 6 birds that are over 16 weeks already. They are actually 17 weeks and a few days old. There are several people out there that have kept cx for 1 year plus. And yes you can get them to lay and you can hatch out chicks from them. I know they won't be the same and that's good because I don't want the same thing. I am working towards the same type of thing Tim shell did 10 years ago before he moved to china. It took him about 6 generations to get to a bird that grew out to butcher size in 12 weeks but would also lay well and not get too fat if kept feed restricted. His also bred true.
