lol ok. well, there's been discussion on some genetics forums about red leakage like that being due to mahogany or autosomal red (i think it's one and same personally)...

guess i'm an oddball, in that i LOVE playing with genetics... then again, i also studied it in college, but more from a production standpoint (dairy cattle primarily), not poultry colors. LOL but it's the color genetics that fascinate me so much. i think i've actually got the 'flavors' figured out in the colored dorking mixture, just waiting on hens to lay so i can start hatching my "guinea pigs" to prove it. then comes the fun part. after tearing apart the mutations involved, then i'm going to rearrange them into what *I* want my colored dorkings to look like. which is somewhat of a cross between what's currently thought of as colored, and what's in the SOP as colored. (they are 2 separate things IMO).

but i digress...

and to bring it back on topic, i've got 27 of donna's (mostly marans) eggs in lockdown (out of 39 but i still can't see into the marans so they all went in) and 8 blrw (kind of disappointing, out of 30 eggs).

now it's time for

, prayers (to any and all deities, major or minor, who may or may not exist), voodoo rituals, or whatever floats your boat.

Not sure if it's an issue with pullet age or someone along her USPS route, but I've had pretty low hatch rates there too...yet she always sends me tons of extras, so I guess it kinda compensates for the hatch rate. I did get 2 actual BLUE barred rocks to hatch from her eggs this week tho, plus a 2nd generation Super Blue & a Super Blue with a reddish tinge (could this be from the leghorn project instead...) plus 4 other Super Blues, an EE & an OE with feathered legs...and all are sold already except the 2 BR.

Day 19...
Broody is in good spirits and as much a velociraptor as ever...

I on the other hand am having crazy dreams about baby chicks...last night I had to do CPR on one drowning....chest compressions on a freshly hatched chook can be so tedious in one's dreams...
I am obsessed about the clutch...will she be as good a Mum as she is a setter? Will she brood them well or will I have to rescue and brood them? She is a first-timer and I am always worried about how they will take to having a family.
I find myself sitting in the henhouse and just staring at her while she dozes.
I guess I should be grateful for the dreams because at least that means I am sleeping. Unlike when I lie awake, running scenerios in my head...
I am thankful, however, I have this 'support group' to confess my madness to.
Is everyone this much of a hen-stalking freak (or incubator stalking, I guess) as I am???
Does it ever get less stressful, or is this normal, and to be expected?

Quote: ok, not sure who you're referring to... i'm having GREAT development from donna's eggs... the blrw that are disappointing came from another breeder in indiana (i think).

i've got 8/12 blue barred rocks in lockdown, 9 cuckoo marans and 10 copper marans. (think that adds to 27... bought 24, she sent 39

Oh...mine were from Donna. She did warn me there were a lot of young pullet eggs in both of my batches, so that's probably part if it...and of course there's always the dear old USPS

i might suggest, if you've got her in the "public" coop, relocate her ASAP or momma may damage the chicks trying to protect them from the other hens, and other hens may damage chicks because 'they're not supposed to be there' (at least from the hen's perspective).

also just my own opinion, if you want NICE babies who won't scream bloody murder every time you try to touch them, let momma be 'momma' for a week or 2, then take them away and make them brooder babies... my first broody momma was awesome with her 14... until it came time to sell them. 1 ended up on top of the house, 2 took off for the back woods, and the rest made the mistake of running INTO my house. LOL (then again, they were free ranged from day 1 also).

I always pull my babies after hatch too. Part of it is a lack of space where I can adequately isolate broodies within my coop & part is due to the "flightiness issue" you mentioned. I like to be able to walk over & pick up my chickens without having to chase them. All that I have brooder raised are like that. All that I got from elsewhere that were hen raised are very flighty & make me chase them if I need to catch them for any reason.

At what age is it safe to put chicks in with adult birds. Ihave one baby the mother got killed and the father took over to care for the chick. The father is a Roster that gets beat up from the other roster and was not planing on keeping him.

If the roo that is playing Mommy is getting beat up then the chick is likely to get killed. Better to keep them separated until the roo decides it's safe for baby to return or until baby is old enuf to fend for itself. How old is baby now...

Today was a very busy day. We are going to a funeral for a couple of days and had to put out extra feeders and waters. Anyway.... I thought I would take a peek at the eggs in the bator and what do I see...... chicks everywhere

I don't know how I missed that. The good news it was 100% hatch at 35% humidity. Nobody was in distress. I don't know when they hatched, but there was not TONS of poo on the floor of the incubator. I got 6 Wheaten Ams, 4 SLW (Foley's Birds but not my roo

) 5 Lavs and 2 splits. I was quite pleased with that.

Tragically the other SLW eggs don't seem to be developing. I have 1 that is developing in the next batch, but the rest are clear.

I need to get them in a big pen so they can do their thing.
