No lights where they are. Just Sun! We just had a really cold spell. It was WAY to early for that cold of temps. Usually we are in the 40'sand 50's at night this time of year. A day or two cooler is normal but not 6 days in a row of COLD day and night temps.

Good luck with your set up! I hope you make it through. That would be TOUGH. I have a 4000 sqf enclosed shop for my MADDNESS

Well my pallet coops lost about 10-12 young birds the last few night. 2 or so a day and then the other night it got down to 31 here and I found 6 dead. They were fully feathered maybe 4 months old. I don't really know why they died other than the cold, but really that should not have got them should it? I even lost a few in the shop with a 75 watt light. It was really cold for a long time. Most of the night in the 30's only in the 40's to 50's during the day so they could not get warmed up I guess. The big birds did fine. I hope it is a few more weeks before the next cold snap. I need to get the little guys outside

but they keep laying and I keep getting eggs in the mail.

Welcome to the TREAD you are in great company here!
I'm so sorry about your losses DM! That is awful. I had to bring my remaining Button Quail indoors, along with 4 Guinea keets that a momma turned up with. The weather has been pretty hot here (85-95) here, but it usually gets pretty cool at night.

Gosh that's like four times the size of my house! I am planning a small brooder shed close to the house so I can run a light in it when needed. I'm also planning next year not to be hatching so late in the fall! But I wanted more layers for market eggs and hatching now is as late as that will work. After this hatch I will wait until probably Jan; if my BO pullets are laying big girl eggs and giving me reasonable numbers I'll do a good size hatch of them, then pick the very best for breeding and sell the rest as started birds. After that I'll probably hatch some more to sell as chicks. No body has chicks here outside of limited variety for a short time at the feed store.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I asked DH if it helped any to know that there are sooo many of us with chickens in the house this time of year? Haha... Nope, not really. Well, it helps me! Thanks guys!

Guest room is totally cleaned out and looks like well, a guest room. It's a good thing I no longer worry over what my family will think. Guests will now sleep with chickens

Hoo Hoo!!!! I know what I'm getting for Christmas! My DD just told me she ordered my Christmas present from my Amazon Wish List today....she said she was going along with my doomsday theory that if OBama was reelected, we would probably need to start raising our own food (chickens and eggs). So this morning she ordered me an incubator! Don't know which one yet, but can't wait! I only have one Rooster, a 3rd generation olive egger Blue Copper Marans. He looks just like a Marans.....feathered legs and all. I have 13 different breed chickens/hens. 6 adults and 7 chicks. All different colored eggs already....time for some Olive ones! I will be reading this thread now so I can learn about incubating so that in Jan/Feb I can start incubating! Yea!
