What kind of BBQ thermometer do you have? I'm thinking that one with an alarm sound like a great option

This seems like the best place to put my Incuview review.

So I started more eggs, relying on my barbeque thermometer with probe.
I stuck it in my mouth and it read 98.7, so I felt confident in its accuracy.


I give the Incuview incubator four stars out of five.

I picked it up at Lowes about 10 years ago for $16.
It looks like a few of these have the alarm function.

Thanks everyone for all your posts . . . I read the entire 1554 post thread while waiting for my new Incuview to show up. Not gonna lie, there was a while back somewhere in the weeds of 2014-2015 where I thought perhaps I'd made a grave mistake (IT's HURTING CHICKS?? WHAAAAAAAAAAA), but I'm glad it sounds like they worked out most of the issues.

I'm going to adopt a lot of the hacks and suggestions made by people here (especially yours @aart !) The only thing I'm still trying to decide for myself is whether to use the autoturner or not. I work from home, so I *can* manually turn them, and perhaps that will be what's best for the shipped eggs (about 2/3 of the eggs I'm going to set, the rest are locals). But it seems a shame not to use the autoturner and let the temp and humidity stay more stable. The biggest issue I had with the borrowed Farm Innovations styro I used last year is that the thing just could not maintain stability, across time or space. It was like a weird, bad, failed chicken TARDIS.

So, thanks again everyone, and wish me luck for the hatch I'm setting on Easter! I'll be sure to leave a review when it's done.

You could turn off the turner and put the eggs upright in a carton for the first 3 days,
then lay them all down and start the turner.

Yeah, I think that's the plan, and I'll have to play it a bit by ear. Hopefully air cells are all good after a couple days being upright, but if they're not might need to reconsider. Before my eggs show up I plan on testing whether there's a way to manually turn some eggs but let the rest be on the roller.

But @aart you're not enamoured of the side-roller anyway, right? If it were as equally feasible to manually tilt eggs in the upright position as to use the side-roller, would you still recommend the autoturner?

That would be interesting...are you an inventor?
I'm pretty fond of an auto turner...tho not crazy about the rolling technique, will still use it out of convenience.

More of a tinkerer, I guess? . . . I'm dying to get the thing so I can see what the actual specs are, how the turner works, etc. Then I've got 4 weeks to figure out what tweaks I need to make.

It just sounds like a lot of people ended up with otherwise inexplicable malpositions with the side-roller, which doesn't make a ton of sense, since hens don't tilt their eggs upright! I had a number of malpositions last time I did shipped eggs, and I'd like to not exacerbate that if at all possible this time around! (Not to mention upright positioning means more room . . . )

For those of you with IncuView Incubators, did you also purchase the HumidiKit they advertise with it? Or do you feel like maintaining the humidity yourself is easier?
