INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

You first mentioned that she was molting, but it's unusual to molt in the middle of summer.
Nobody has ever told my flock that!

This is when they normally molt, and feathers are flying everywhere now.

Right now I'm planning to be there Sunday. Getting a bit tricky as my great-niece who lives with her mother in Idaho and spends the summer with her dad here has to leave on the 2nd, so there's a party for her this weekend. That's Saturday, I think, so should be okay if I can get everything else done.

I have two guys that can go to the freezer--what equipment do I need to bring? Not sure if I have any big pots left, but have a sharp machete plus the usual kitchen knives, and of course, a vinyl apron and a cooler.

I'm looking forward mostly to just socializing as well as learning.

And I have 4 white silkies (at least they were white before the last rain) that I'm not keeping for breeding--can't remember sex right now, but they're around 6 months old. May have Appenzeller and tolbunt Polish chicks, have to check my inventory. The silkies range from $5-$10, Apps are $5-$10 depending upon age, and tolbunts are $25. If anyone is interested, PM me. and I'll bring them Sunday or make other arrangements if you aren't going.

DarthLayer- I am really sorry that your hen isn't well right now. Its so stressful when you don't know how to fix something for them.

I was told that a nice pair of rubber gloves would be an asset too, but that's only if you mind getting messy. I would like an App pullet now that you've got me interested- thanks for that, lol.
I will be bringing two roos with me too, but honestly, I don't want to eat them. I don't mind giving them to someone who does though. I'm pretty sure I'll be off eating chicken for the near future after the Poultry fest.

Mother2Hens- I just want to thank you for taking the time to post this information. I think its really amazing how someone comes here in need of info and everyone jumps in to help solve the various issues. Even if its not my chicken this time, Its such good information.

RacinChickins- Its nice talking with other people who are also "chicken crazy" as I am being called by friends and family lately. I'm choosing to take it as a compliment even if its not how it was intended

. I really want to continue my bird education because I plan to have these little guys forever. I am going as much for the company as I am for soaking up the good information available. I think much like my bullmastiffs they are just a part of our life now so I need to know all I can to care for them well. It must be noted that while my family thought I was crazy about my dogs, they now love them as much as I do and my BIL even got one a few years ago. That is not an endorsement for people to run out and get them by the way, because like chickens, they definitely aren't perfect for everyone.

We have at least a dozen people signed up for Poultry Fest. I had someone ask me today if anyone else who is coming is into Silkies, as they are her favorites. I don't have any myself but I'm sure with the popularity of Silkies, others who are attending have them. I know that Janet (Jchny2000) has a lot of birds of many types and varieties.

And others who are coming are all over the map as far as experience, breeds kept, and how they approach chicken keeping.

So that made me think? Those of you who are coming, what are you excited about?

What do you hope to learn? See? Do? I personally just want to meet as many 'Chicken Folk' as I can, talk shop, and make friends and contacts.

I am hoping my chicken journey is long and enjoyable, so meeting like minded people who are sailing on the ship along with me is top on my list. And meeting people who can make my chicken math worse isn't such a bad thing either.......

And for those of you who can't make it, we'll see how it goes, but the thought of an annual event is noodling around in the back of my (admittedly porous) mind.......
I went out to check on the chickens at about 9 pm and they were already ready for bed, of course. I have a lawn chair in there that i sit in when I visit them. I dont have any roosts up, because they are just in a temporary pen. I have 10 chickens in this pen. Their were 8 on the lawn chair! 3 on each arm and 2 on the back. It was really funny. And one one arm their was a cochin, then a brown leghorn, and then another cochin, needless to say the leghorn was squished. I will not be setting in that lawn chair anymore, because they get poop on it,it was broken anways, thats why I wasnt concerned about putting it in there. So I wnt and found another old broken lawn chair that I hadnt got rid of yet and put it in their pen. then I transferred some chickens on to the new lawn chair and brought the 2 that werent already on the lawn chairs over to them. They wanted over with the other but acted like they would die or something if they touched the ground lol. So there ended up being 5 chickens on each lawn chair. I just thought it was funny!
That is a funny story. I have seen photos of walk-in chicken coop(s) that had an old chair sitting inside, which looked pretty cute. Of course the photos didn't show chicken poop all over them!

Well, it should be o-shamed of itself for standing up so ridiculously! haha I don't know what it is; I ran across it on the Internet once. I posted in before, and bradselig, who seems to have a goal of owning every bird breed possible-- haha-- said he wants to get some.

That's what I read in my "Chicken Health for Dummies" book. However, every book/article I read typically says something different. That's one thing that drives me crazy about caring for chickens-- advice isn't very consistent, so you just have to read everything and go with your gut instinct. My Jersey is the only one who has molted so far since she's the oldest. She had a light molt last fall.
kabhyper~ Thanks for the beautiful Gus photos!
vickichicki~ Glad things are more peaceful for you. : - )
Quinstar~ Did Tansy return?
jchny~ I thought you just had the two big dairy goats. Where did the pygmy come from?
I'm going to check out the poultry at the Vanderburgh Co. Fair this afternoon. It's 78 and gorgeous! I have Violet and Adeline out in the tractor. : - )

Well hopefully I won't be kicked off the site for copyright infringement, but I figure I am promoting the owner of this site's "Chicken Health for Dummies" book, which I ordered from the BYC site. I've scanned some pages, but many of the pages can be found on the Internet.

M2H~ No, Tansy has been mourned as a loss. I feel terrible and the rest of the flock is NOT happy about being confined. I keep thinking she'll just show up at some random time, but I know it's just wishful thinking. DH told me she went on a "spiritual journey". I love him ;). I even braved our woods with the mosquito masses to check out near the coyote dens and see if I could find any feathers or anything. I'm not sure if it's better to not find anything or not. At least I don't have a terrible mental picture this way.

Ok, the man bird needs to stop!!! It's seriously creeping me out.

Just got home from picking up a Silkie from Bradselig! Thank you very much, she is precious! :love I need to get pictures of her, maybe after she's gotten a little more used to her surroundings and is no longer pretending to be a statue.

*UPDATE* Nothing big but my hen has actually been moving around a little better and using her legs a little more but still pretty immobilized .

This guy is a Modern Game Bird.

I remember coming across them when I was searching chicken pictures for my bantams. I can not see why people would find them desirable.. Every time I see one I think prehistoric...
Scary....

Crafty- well those will be interesting babies!!! Hope for more!

Vicki- I'm with you, don't care for the modern game at all!! But somebody does or they wouldn't be around!!;)
